i would have loved to have seen your face!
it's quite sad really that the majority of people are ignorant to good independent coffee houses and wouldn't realise good coffee if it was thrown at them!
looks that way.
To Lu, I agree with you completely on what you were saying. I refuse to drink any coffee from McDonalds and places like that because I know that it's not quality. I mean I was in a cruise recently in July up in Alaska and I've never had such a hard time finding a decent and local coffee shop. Whenever we were at a port, first thing I would do is find the local coffee. The majority of people don't know coffee and are too blind to see where the good stuff is.
Why hate? everything has its place even starbucks. its a great place for people to get introduced to the coffeeshop atmosphere where they become more comfortable with the language and offerings and then are able to branch out and try new things. there are worse offenders out there than starbucks. google the big five
oh thanks so much for sharing that! sooo funny
Agreed. Once upon a time long long ago when I was growing up in Seattle Starbuck's was just another tiny specialty roaster. The real quality beans are a small fraction of what is grown worldwide. Because of availability and roasting on a gigantic scale like they do Starbuck's was probably forced to make concessions and import a lower quality product (green coffees) that are available on the scale they are looking for.

I sincerely believe the independent has the advantage these days. In most cases we have better product, better trained staff and therefore better coffee. Some folks will inevitably make their way to our shops, it is our job to educate them and then show them what they are missing when they go with the mermaid.
Um... last time I checked starbucks wasn't "coffee", it was "500 calories of sugar and fat per drink".
Since I recently got into the specialty coffee business I see these same blogs about every 2 months. What you have to understand is the majority of those here in the U.S. dont have an understanding nor the education for good coffee, sugar and milk tastes good, no argument there. But let me add this, do you all visit specialty wine shops? Do we all have the same understanding and education about wine like we do coffee? Same with coffee; so not knowing the difference a year ago, I took interest to it and now i have a decent understanding.

Ruth Chris serves great steaks but so do small privately owned steakhouses...

I believe we should continue, one person at a time to edcuate those who dont understand coffee then serve them the best cup of coffe they've ever had!!
Agreed!
Amen!
We give Starbucks a lot of crap, but small business coffee shops do owe a lot to Starbucks. Starbucks paved the way, so to speak. I'm not saying I like their product, but I do respect their business. Also, if they didn't burn their coffee, they would fail to have a consistent tasting drink at every location. Many uneducated coffee consumers just want their drink to taste the same every time, and will most likely just ad cream and sugar to the drink...

In an ideal world, there would be no Starbucks and the average consumer would be into fine micro-roasted coffee.
