What are we?
this is rhetorical:
My coworker, Janice*; is a barista.
I am a baristo.
We are baristi.
Yes? No?
Why?
Why not?

I'd like to know what YOU think of the phrase...
if you're fine with 'barista' that's awesome - but that is not what I'm interested in; but how you feel about it... how do you perceive yourself in that title and how do you project yourself - in any title - toward the public from behind the bar? to your friends? to your colleagues? etc. etc.
can we be more than 'barista'?

I think the term should, technically, be Barrister. If that's not an Americanization or a traditional Italian-ism, I don't know what is.
So, that's the right answer. Of course, coffee guy is probably the least pretentious sounding, socially acceptable term.

i like the term "server " and not in a unisex TGIFriday sort of way , but as a descriptor of the core of the barista experience.
we serve people, we take care of them , that kind of thing...

i am not much of a cunning linguist and I dont know much about words and there origin. But I do humorously agree with you Tom. When i first started working in a cafe I was the first male employees to work there. I referd to myself as a "Baristo" to set myself apart. I think it important to give ourselves creative titles to set ourselves apart from the rest. As for the Plural I think we should make one up for ourselves.
I like:
a Gaggle of Baristas
a Murder of Baristas
a Grip of Baristas..... These are just a few suggestions. I would be interested to hear your ideas.
As for now I consider myself a "Chocolate Specialist" or aka sales rep. (I dont care for it)
If I still worked in a Cafe i think i would call myself a Caffeinated Mixologist. Because isan't that what we all are at heart.

Funny. I may actually begin to refer to myself as "The Doppio" from now on. I did have a husband/wife pair of regular customers a while ago - she got a capp for her and a "doppio for the doppio". I thought it was cute...

haha, yeah I've had the "Doppio for the Doppio" person/people before... I also like "A Macch for Mack" - not as common...
