Does anyone know of good coffee shops in Indianapolis? I'd prefer to support the local store owners instead of the large retail chains, but I've yet to find a suitable local coffee shop. Does anyone have any suggestions? Something on the north or northeast side of Indy would be perfect.

On the northeast side try Higher Grounds in Fisher's.
If you are on the northwest side you can stop by my shop, Bjava Coffee and Tea.
I am at 56 and Lafayette Rd. open from 6 to 5 Monday to Friday, and 7 to 3 on Sat.

I live in Muncie area and work with Alliance World Coffees, which is a mirco-artisan roaster. We supply to a lot of shops in the state, but I don't think I've found one shop in Indy that I'm confident I'll get good coffee preparation at yet. Stay tuned though, we are hoping to open a gourmet shop in Muncie and Indy in the next year....
Thanks for the tips. BJ, I'll try to make it to your place in the next couple of weeks. As for Higher Grounds, I've been there before but it wasn't a pleasant experience, in fact, one of the worst. Maybe I just caught them on a bad day...
What made your experience at Higher Grounds so bad?
I went before work one morning and with only 2 people in front of me, it took almost 15 minutes for a latte to go. Plus, it wasn't flavored right. I'm usually running late, so I never have that much time to spend in the morning at a coffee shop. It may be petty to some people, but customer service is a huge deal to me. Like I said, though, I'm not trashing on them...I could have just caught them on a bad day. But it wasn't a good experience for me.
Sorry to hear about your experiance. I haven't actually been there, but had heard good things about them.
Hey Purple Daisy. My name is Darin and I am the owner of Higher Grounds in Fishers. I am sorry that you had a bad experience at our location. We pride ourselves on quick service and a high quality product mix. I don't have a good reason as to why your experience was bad. I greatly appreciate the feedback. Could you let me know if you visited us on a weekday or weekend? If it was a weekday, then please let me know if it was before or after 3pm. Also, if you are willing to give us another chance, then I would like to treat you to a drink of your choice on me. All I will need is a first and last name. I will credit your account with $10. Once again, I apologize for the bad experience. Take care and thank you for supporting local independent shops.
Hi Darin, It was a weekday, probably 2-3 months ago and it was probably before 7 am. Like I said, I could have just caught your staff on a bad day. I just remember I was already rushed and then that slowed me up even more. I'll try to stop back by on a day when I have more time. Thanks!
I have been bouncing around Indy coffee a while as an enthusiast. I landed a job with Bj during a career change, she is the Bee's Knees here in town! Mad skills and 15 years of knowledge. I am pleased to apprentice under her. And that is what it is, not a job but, an apprenticeship. Her roaster left the business so she going through the trial of bouncing around trying to get the best. When you are on the west side try her out, she is in a strip mall next to a Mexican place in the corner.

Any update on this?  I am headed to Indy in two weeks and will need good espresso.

Anything Downtown?
