When a POS doesn't make sense financially, what cash register brands/models do you guys recommend? Seems like all I read is how hard they are to program. Is there anyone out there that just loves their cash register? My top two right now are Casio PCR-T470 and Sharp XE-A206. Anyone have experience with the dealer-programmed models?

Teresa, if a POS does not make sense financially due to cash outlay, perhaps you should consider leasing.
teresa cash register are much harder to programe. i deal with one for few years. then change a pos and wow!!!!!
much more efficient and easier to keep track.
I have 2 SAM 4POS cash registers that I'd be willing to sell cheap. I will say that a lease on a true POS system is for sure worth doing.
When I worked at a local drive-thru shop, we just did lid count and had a drawer with cash. No register.
To tell the truth, I know for a fact that theft was through the roof. Then I used a regular cash register at another place and there was also a major problem with theft (the z-reports print out an odd number, which ended up showing how much the baristas could steal for the till to be right).
I would definitely recommend trying to find a POS that will be within your budget. If not, lease like mentioned above. It cuts down the theft costs and increases time management. You will be able to record all sales and what is being sold. This, in turn, will also give you a lot of insight into what you are selling. Unlike a register, which will only give you prices and maybe titles that you programmed in.
Nix the POS and cash register. Whats wrong with just a cash draw and calculator with tape even, if need be? Of course, unless you do a huge business. Think of the cash outlay and when things break or something happens requiring service. There is a local coffee shop here who had me setup a $10,000 POS setup....for an $80 a day business.

What kind of POS did you find that only cost $1500? The other problem is that I haven't found a POS yet that works with Mac... and there's no way we're going thru the torture of working on a PC!

Lightspeed works on a Mac.
It ranges from $1000 to $3000.
Apple also carries it's own retail POS system. Just Googling "Mac POS system" got me tons of things on the front page.

well the software was free!!! 1500$ was for the hardware
i use openbravoPOS its work on mac and its free. i set it all up my seft , touch me a lot of time to work it out but now that i know the systeme i can do anything with it

Nothing is wrong with a cash drawer and calculator if you're working by yourself and don't care to market directly to your customers. Otherwise, some serious issues have been mentioned in this thread. As for the POS you set up - $80 a day? That doesn't ever require a cigar box.

My point exactly. You just need to think if you NEED to have a POS or not.
