In November I embarked on my dream of owning a small coffee roastery. Everything so far has gone better than I could have hoped. I have access to amazing green on demand here in Minneapolis, which means I have a great selection for my customers. This great selection has caused a serious problem for me. Printing my labels is horrendously expensive if I send them to local printer. I want to do this from the office and save some money but I would like to hear from people who have done this before. I would like to know the style of printer (ink jet or laser), the sticker paper, and anything pertaining to image quality. I have tried stamps but am very unimpressed with the final result. The printed labels seem to pop and my customers really respond to them. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Don't use an inkjet, can get wet and bleed. I print mine using a laserjet, just ordered a color laserjet for more "pop" potential. Best price I know of for labels is onlinelabels.com. IMO as good as Avery at about 1/10 the price at Office Depot etc.

You were right on with onlinelabels. It is about 1/10 of what Avery would cost. What make and model of printer did you pick out? Any industry standards you know of? It's embarrassing to admit, but with all the graphic design I have done over the years, printing is still my Achilles.

We use a Primera LX810 printer for our labels and all I can say is that it's just a hassle every week. It prints out quality labels sometimes and other times, even when the ink levels are full, it decides to print out faded looking labels.  We've got about 15 different labels and each one prints out slightly different so we have to readjust how the label sits in the printer every time we run a print for a different coffee. Overall it just works like it has some sort of bug that neither we or Primera can figure out. 

We would like to be able to print labels in house but because we have so much trouble with it we are currently working on outsourcing the printing of all of our labels.  

You may be able to save some money printing in house but unless you find a system that really works for you it may not be worth the hassle.  

Also, I'd advise against using 15 different labels it is a headache if you print in house and if you do decide to get the printing outsourced it will be cheaper and easier to meet the printing minimums. Good luck with your new business!  

We use Primera every so often. The quality is great, however the cost of the ink can really get crazy. Once in a while we buy labels for our laser printer from Worldlabel.com, the prices are excellent. For very long runs, we started to get some pre-printed labels recently from lightinglabels.com. They are brilliant and recommend them.
