I think I have decided on my shop's name and logo, and it is totally different than what I posted for review recently. Before I post it online, I wanted to check domain names and verify that I can get the ones I want. I need some guidance on how to search existing domain names, find a good domain registrar, and all the other decisions I need to make. What should I be looking for in a registrar, what company do you recommend, what extra perks do I want?

We went with Yahoo. It was a good price and included some decent design software. Included domain registration and hosting.
Godaddy.com is a good one to check out. They have domain names at low prices and many other products that you might be interested in.
Yahoo and GoDaddy are good options but you ought to consider your needs now and in the future. Pretty much one registrar is just as good as another, what you should think about is your hosting needs.

Do you know how to create your own website? Will you hire a web designer? Blog? E-commerce? Figure out what you're planning on doing with the website and that will help you to decide on an appropriate provider. Lots of companies offer cheap web hosting and some variations on options, but how will they be when support is needed? That's the question.

For years, I've used enomcentral.com as our domain registrar. For our purposes, we own a variety of domain names and utilize enom as a control point for those names.

Recently, we switched web hosting to Media Temple. Great service, good prices, extremely flexible now and as our needs grow and great customer service. I think our current plan runs about $20 per month.

What you want to do is check enom for the name you want to use. Simply go to their site and punch in the name you're thinking about. It will tell you if it is available, or it will tell you the possible variations that are available. You can register your name now and then worry about setting up your website later. But get your domain name locked in as soon as possible - you never know when someone else might take it.
Jay has a lot of good advice here - A lot of people feel that they just sign up and are ready to go. Remember that site still has to be created and don't forget about how email will be handled. Some sites don't have that accessable online.
