Java. You know Java probably gets one of the poorest raps from roasters- geneally based on the fact that most buy either coffee from PTPN's (Nationally owned and managed estates), small private estates or brokers. I think there are some excellent Java's out there- coming from the less traditionally accesable parts of the island- namely Central and West Java. Unusual in the fact that many of these coffees are prepped by dry processing. Extreme fruitiness- mixed with the traditional characters of the Java Arabica make these origins something entirely new for me and other roasters

I just had some Sidikalang from HasBean in the UK, and I am stunned. It is the best Indo I have tried, and I'vre tried a few. Had it as French press and it was amazing, tried a bit as espresso and although a little stale by then, it was palatable but I didn't have enough left to really get the best from it. I will get more and fresher and try it properly. It had none of the 'ashy' or 'musty' flavours that many people find turns them away from Indos. Definitely one I'll recommend.

Sidikalang for sure is not as well known origin as it should be. Part of the problem is there is a blur of definition lines between the mass of origin names that are coming out of Northern Sumatra. Lintong, Mandehling, Sidikalang all originate in a geographically tight area. Often I cup Lintong that is obviously Lintiong- sometimes it is obviously Sidikalang... sometimes it is a blend of the two!

Yeah i agree with heminui.... sidikalang sure is an interesting cuppa... but like what Alun says.. its got to be cultured properly before it gets the accolades it deserve.

Thanks for the comments KuMa. For sure Sumatra has many more origins than what are found on a labels of many of the big US roasters!! I think roasters such as ourselves and other Asian/Australasian roasters should look more in their own backyards
