High Quality Printers...What are you using for labels?
After a conversation with my local printer today, I've finally had enough grief from them that I want to buy a label printer and start doing my own date stamping, product names, etc, on a pre-designed label stock.
What printers are folks using that don't cost an arm and a leg? I'm willing to give the arm, just not the leg, too!

I am with you! I have looked at a Primera. have not made a decision yet but have had them print and send samples. They look good on gloss labels so now I need to see them on matte finish. They calc. the cost per label (for printing at about $.09, plus the label stock (rolled labels). Interested to hear what you have found.

We have a Primera LX400, it's ok i guess... it prints labels. I haven't used another label printer so I'm really not sure how it measures up

We've got the LX810 from Primera, its been good for us. Wish you could get the cartridges refilled instead of having to but them at $45 a pop but it's worth it for the flexibility.

We go for simplicity. I use a Brother B&W QL-570 Label printer and it works great.

We use an HP 2600dn laser printer and die cut laser sheets, gloss stock. Price was $400
Cartridge re-fill are expensive $90 - $120
Works well for now!
Has saved us $1000's of dollars on design changes

John I love simplicity, what are your all in label costs?
Also interested in the label costs on the HP?

Derryl, I like your concept of the regional map, very clever. So you are printing on sheets? Do you know what your all in costs per label are?

Sheets are 8.5"x11"
half pound labels 10 per sheet cost per label $0.05
Back label 9 per sheet cost per label $0.08
one pound labels 6 per sheet cost per label $0.11
Printing cartridges are rated for 2000 sheet. Depending how you do the math (and design) you are less than $0.03 printing cost per label.
I recommend gloss labels as the colors stand up better than non-gloss (which can bleed color).
My HP 2600 is discontinued, I am sure if you look at the new ones they are getting better all the time on ink usage!

WOW! Great discussion everyone! Sorry I've been non-existent on here for a bit since posting the question. I've been looking at the Primera line of printers and perhaps looking to have a standard label printed on roll stock by another printer with only a printable area left for roast date, level of roast, etc, that I would use the printer for.
We currently outsource the printing and they are printed on sheets via a laser machine and then cut in stacks. Our printer seems to hate us because we have so many single-origins and blends, and the labels have a white line border around them that their employees sometimes goof up when they die cut the sheets. So, it's become this hate/hate relationship. Currently, we're just utilizing label stock we have too much of, or origins we no longer carry and printing Avery sheets to cover the name. Very home-grown, but it works temporarily.
Average label cost is .10-.15 now, but smaller reprint runs sometimes push the cost up near .30 (insane). Sounds like we could be doing a lot better!
