Hiring our first barista
We're a small, newly-opened coffee roastery that so far has only been partner-staffed. One of our partners just got a new job (great for him, tough for us) so we're at the point where we'll need to hire a barista part-time. Folks who have done this already, any guidance on how to approach this? We're a no-tip establishment (tips go to charity) so we recognize we'll need to adjust salary for an employee accordingly. Since we are small, we wouldn't be looking for a "rock star" barista, just someone who would want to work about 20-30 hours a week and could work solo. Apart from the jobs board here, and local networking, are there other places to find quality people?

Hey, Margaret! Your profile says you're near Chicago. If that's the case, you could use Poachedjobs.com. The jobs page here on Barista Exchange links from there. I've had much better luck with Poached than with Craigslist.
I have to disagree, though--you totally want a rock star barista! You want someone awesome who's going to represent your business in the best way! As someone who educates people not only on coffee, but also on hiring and employee engagement, I have a couple of ideas that may help with a job posting:
-Consider your company mission and values and hire someone that fits that culture. Coffee skills can be trained, but you need to find the right personality.
-Clearly state the job description, expectations, company values, and lead by example.
-Give info on potential growth opportunities, whether it's education, position possibilities, attending events, etc.
