Just wondering how do you decide when to open, close, or just change your hours for the holidays? This morning I woke my normal time start to drive to the shop which opens at 6a.m. Their was not another car in sight. Was very slow the first hour picked up a little at 7 but all in all not a great morning.

We started being mostly open. In years since, we've looked at prior-year sales numbers to see which days, mornings, etc justified being open.

We too were very slow this morning.
This morning was a real hard one for us to call. Sometimes holiday mornings are good for us, with people having a little extra time to goof around. Wasn't surprised to not see many of our early regulars, but the late morning "sleep in" rush that I was kinda hoping for never came. Brewed and dumped way more coffee than I'd like to think about in an attempt to be ready for a rush that never appeared.

Strangely, this morning was not like Labor Day or Memorial Day, which was kinda what we'd thought. Maybe all of our customers were just as confused about what to do today as we were?

Ah well, tomorrow is a new day.
i closed at 6pm last night (instead of 9pm) and we had a good day. when i left at 2:15pm today after opening it had been reasonably busy as well.

thus far the only modifications i've made from our 7am-9pm 7 days a week hours are thanksgiving and christmas eve 7am-12pm, christmas closed, and 4th of july 7am-6pm. seems to work pretty well.
For 4th of July, I knew we shouldn't be open that evening, so we closed at 5pm. That worked well. Today felt somewhat like a Sunday in terms of business. A little off from a typical Sunday, but not much. In Phoenix, during the summer, weekends are very shakey, as people like to get out of town to escape the heat on the weekends. So it's always a bit of a crap shoot.

Memorial Day we were open regular hours (we are open 7a-10p, daily). The phone rang a LOT that day, with customers wondering if we would be open. Today we were open regular hours, even though banks were closed, and many big corporate businesses were closed. Since opening April 23, the only day I've changed our hours for was last night, closing at 5pm. Looking ahead, I'll be closed Easter, Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Years. TGiving Eve, Christmas Eve, and New Years Eve, we'll close at 5pm. Every other day, business willing, we'll be open 7a-10p. At least, that's my first year plan.
Thanks for the imput. The first year we where open every day the next year we closed or shortened our hours on most holidays. I did not think about the holiday being sunday and what that might due to monday sales. I guess just like Brady said tommorow is another day. If someone could tell the future to know when you would be busy it would sure help payroll.
