your typical guest orders a drink, you with all your splendor and glory bust out a drink that is nothing short of perfection. you give them their bev, and they welcome themselves to a seat... 15 minutes pass, and this same guest returns to you asking if you can, "pop this in the microwave for me," as they hand you the once beautiful delight you gave them earlier... what do you do?
also, since this just took place about 15 minutes ago; if someone orders a drink extra hot, you make it so, and then they hand it right back to you asking you to again, "pop it in the microwave and, 'nuke it'," what do you say?
thoughts?

Ummm. Sorry, we don't have a microwave? Then toss the microwave.
Just put their cup under the steam wand on the espresso machine. It's faster than the microwave.
I'm pretty sure this has health code violations written all over it...not to mention the fact that it is just plain disgusting to put a steam wand into a drink that a customer has already drank out of.

I would probably just remake their drink.

Tell them there's a Starbucks around the corner.
Maybe make a sign that says "Microwave is for food only" ... ? It's hard to say no to a customer, but that is craziness. Think of a way you can educate them if possible, on the problems with reheating coffee or milk ...
i appreciate your support... umm... besides saying, "it makes it taste like nasties!" can you help provide more backing? i mean it just doesn't seem healthy/sanitary by any means... right?

Touche Terika. But isn't that like using silverware, cups, and plates. After using the steam wand, clean it up properly. Plus if we remake drinks when customers wants something reheated, that wouldn't be great on our numbers.

Hey Daniel, are you giving those drinks out in to go cups? Maybe that person is like the owner of the store I work at. I swear he has a volcano mouth. I can give him a freshly brewed cup of coffee and it's never hot enough.

I am guessing that these customers are sticking around for a bit, maybe you could suggest two smaller volume drinks instead of one large one. My personal opinion is that drinks should be steamed to a temperature so they can be consumed rather quickly, but we also don't carry large sizes. The re-steaming thing is a health code issue at least in our neck of the woods and we don't have a microwave. I would say every time a customer asks a question it is an opportunity for discussion and education.
I'm still sure that health code has issues with this idea, which makes it a bad practice. Taking extra time to do cleaning that could be avoided does not help with our numbers either. Although I would probably not remake half of a drink that somebody ordered half an hour ago, I would much rather remake a drink and make a customer happy than lose them to the coffee shoppe down the street.

If they want it nuked, they are showing that they need a little education from their barista, so you should take the opportunity to graciously enlighten them.

I was just talking about this today. I find it quite disgusting when someone asks me to "nuke" his or her drink... I have NEVER been a fan of micro-waves and never owned one growing up... (they creep me out in all honesty). . . I would much rather re-make a drink than zap it. It doesn't happen often enough where I work for it to be a problem as far as the financing goes... When a customer realizes you are willing to go that extra step to please them, you're not going to lose them as a patron.
You might try this approach. I am going to remake your drink on the house. I would much rather serve you top quality than to nuke it. In fact, our policy is to not offer nuked drinks here at our cafe'. However I want to keep you happy, so just this once, I'm buying, to save a nuclear disaster (laugh-ha ha ha ha, then smile) 8-)
Seriously, that is hilarious! I am definitely using that line the next time a customer asks to have his or her drink nuked.
