You probably need to be looking in 1 of the bigger cities- Auckland, Wellington or Christchurch. Carl Sara might be a good one to buzz for more information if you have not done already. I am not sure exactly how solid things are there economically at present... but I guess you will find out. Kiwis rarely have apartments, rather they "Flat" which means 3-4 people sharing the cost of a house (spliting the rent, electricity, food between them). Its the traditional way of doing things and you get to meet alot more people through the 'flatmates' nework.
