Hi....
Yes, you need a 58mm tamper is what I know for sure but are you trying to get more exact than that??

Yeah. I feel like I'm getting too much side channeling even when stockflething with a 58mm convex tamp. Looking to switch out to a slightly larger tamp.

We use 21gram Synesso baskets in bottomless PF's, and my baristas use a variety of 58mm tamps with good results.

Piston fit is nice but you run the chance of getting it too tight and either pulling out the basket when you remove the tamp or creating a vacuum and sucking the coffee bed back apart after you tamp. In any case we had a stack of stock baskets lying around so I measured about ten. All a hair different, they are stamped you know, and it looks like 58.3 will work but it is hard to say without on being milled and trying it out. The sidewalls taper and at the very bottom you are a 58 strait up and at the very lip you stretch out to 58.8. There now lies the spot in between....went in an measured to the spring clip and think your hunch may be good. Have fun.

i had the same problem i just got a new tamp a flat one 58mm from visions for about $35 and its great

Are you sure you're getting side-channeling? What makes you think that? Are you seeing a channeling-spot show up consistently in the same spot(s)?

- make sure your dosing technique is sound (even, level foundation BEFORE leveling)
- Analyze your Stockfleth leveling. Make sure you're not inadvertently creating a weak point
