Black Cat got robbed this morning at 6am. Granted the economy in Portland is horrible. Perhaps that is one reason for an increase in crime. Do fellow coffee shop people have policies in place for robbery? This is the 2nd time this has happened in 7 years. Any ideas?

Who robs a coffee shop that early, everyone know you have to wait till after 10AM if you want to get any real money.

Seriously that sucks, Video surveillance and a silent holdup alarm button under each register. It won't prevent a robbery but it may help the cops catch the bad guy.
This seems to be a growing problem. My stand was also robbed at gun point last month. As have others here in Western Washington: Seattle to Olympia where I am located.
Mine was also hit at opening so not much to gain. Silent alarms are too costly for me. I have purchased a good multiple camara system with a 48 hour record time. Not much good if they don't record. Besides that my policy is for my employees to comply 100% and not to display any resistance then immediately call the authorities. Beyond that there isn't much we can do to stop someone who is determined to act out in this manner.
Just one,
KISS
give them what they want and call 911 when they leave and tell your staff to do the same. Another list member was a victim of a smash and carry after his open hours recently. I'm sure he is glad he was not in your shoes.
In my humble opinion,,, DO NOT mess with people pointing a gun at you. They are now in charge. Forget the hero stuff you see on tv. Do you best to stay alive to open your store another day. I have the hardware in place to install video web enabled cameras linked to a DVR in our store so you we check the recordings the next day. I still need to finish the setup. Not very expensive when you consider what you have invested. If you want to know more about this I can advise you and hook you up with the right people to get this in place.
signed,
another vulnerable shop owner still alive in Stevenson Washington.
