Steam, pressure, water, and power consumption of an idle machine

Hi all,

This discussion started as a sidebar to another: "Leaving your machine on overnight?" I'm splitting it out, since it is about to wander fairly far from the original topic. Please forgive the somewhat kludgy attempt at preserving the original diversions...

You're really overthinking this thing, dude...

I'm not trying to debate, just pointed out a slight inaccuracy. Any debate should cite the gas laws and energy of phase transition. Sorry to question anyone's authori-tie. (Cartman accent)

And dude, you should be debating.  You're good at it.  And it's the internet.

Agreed on both counts. Yes, I'm overthinking this. I have a mechanical engineering degree and those particular brain cells haven't gotten to come out and play in years (as you can tell by the lack of gas law references in my discussions so far). Use it or lose it, right? That's why I broke this out, so we could chat about it a while and anyone that found it boring and irrelevant could just ignore it.

Yes! We should discuss this and disagree when we feel its necessary. I claim no authority, and only seek to share my observations and partial understanding. Hopefully you'll all continue to do the same and we'll learn something from each other in the process. That's one of the reasons we're here, right?

The boilers on the new Aurelia II Competition are insulated. I suspect that the ones on the Astoria +4U and Wega Green Line are as well. IIRC they all have a power-saving idle mode capability too.

The boiler on the Franke Evolution is insulated, as are both boilers on the Egro 55 and One.

Boiler insulation is good. Thermal isolation from the frame seems like a good idea as well, not familiar with anyone doing it though.
