Marine aquarium people use these. There's also a trick but I forgot it. I believe it had something to do with testing the ph of water, then letting it set for 24 hours then testing again and the difference in ph x 2.5 = tds in ppm. I'm not 100% on it though. If I come across the answer I'll let you know.
