General Liability Policy
Hello All,
Another newbie roaster question for those who are kind enough to share their experiences. When talking to the people who run a local farmer's market they informed me that all food vendors, coffee roasters in my case, who would like to participate in the market need to have a general liability policy of $1,000,000 per occurrence. My question to those who have participated in farmer's markets or similar types of events is...Is this common, and is this a common amount for a GL policy? I'm sure some if not most of you have some sort of policy like this, if so what is the process like for someone small starting out to get a policy like this? Any recommendations of places to start? What type of premiums can I be expecting for something like this? How hard was the process of obtaining a policy like this for you?
Any information would be helpful, and I thank you in advance for your time and responses!

Hi Joel,
While I am now a coffee roaster, I used to be an insurance agent. You should have a business owners policy to cover your equipment and general liability including products liability and completed operations. A million is a minimum in my mind......Once you have a policy like this you merely contact your insurance agent and ask them to provide a certificate of insurance naming the Farmers market as an additional insured.
I have been doing farmers markets for three years (this coming season being our 4th). The general liability insurance was already in place when we started the farmers market because we have a roastery and cafe. Recently, we sold the cafe and converted our business owners policy to one designed for a roasting operation.
