Is it Maxwell House that is running the ad on TV saying that they've switched to 100% arabica beans and a bunch of office sorts cheer? I wonder what that'll do to the commodity market...

That reminds me, I got a bunch of sample bags from a newish roaster (Madcap in GR, shout out!) and knew I wouldn't brew it all at my shop. So I took a pound to this woodworking studio that I moonlight at and had crotchety old woodworkers with missing fingers grunting and tipping their mugs to me all day. We should make a commercial about THAT!

"Craftmanship, its more than just fine furniture."

Hi there Chris. Welcome! Isn't that so true though about the office coffee?! Sad! There's more savvy coffee drinkers now than ever, but still, office coffee is hugely prevalent. I currently work in an office (although I'm trying to free myself and rejoin the coffee world permanently...hint hint if anyone knows of any positions in SE MI), and I routinely hear compliments to the gal that makes the coffee every a.m.... "Great coffee Lisa!" I'm proud to say in all my years working there I've never once touched that pot of ground Maxwell house!!

Hey everyone, I've been in the industry for only a month (part-time), I have a lot of learning to do, but I'm super enthusiastic about it. Glad to be a part of this group!

I agree with most of the comments on here thus far. Michigan does have a lot to offer being from Southeast Michigan I can say that the west coast of the mitten is definitely where it's at. As far as coffee goes, I think that most people just accept what they drink based on availability; and by that I mean what's in their office.

Many people in Michigan (and other places as well) still consider sbux "good coffee". In the earlier days it set the standard, but now the future of really good coffee belongs to the third wave of independents that truly understand the bean and are able to demonstrate its nuances to their customers. This type of retailer is still few and far between (there's definitely not a one I can think of in my immediate vicinity). So, I definitely think the field is wide open with potential to take coffee to a whole new level in Michigan (and possibly the midwest as a region)...if we could only get past this messed up economy!! So, hopefully MI is up and coming, but I have to admit I'm a bit worried.

I have spent more time in Michigan in the past year and a half than any other state in my 15 state territory. Michigan is up-and-coming and in some cases has already arrived. I have been everywhere from Detroit, to Grand Rapids, to Holland, to Traverse City, to Glen Arbor and beyond.

I'd say on the whole people in Michigan (and the midwest as a whole) are wholly under-educated when it comes to coffee and what good coffee is in comparison to those in other areas of the country. What does everyone think?
