About Me:
My name is Jason Dominy. I live in Atlanta. I have been in coffee for more than 14 years. I have opened and ran two of my own coffeehouses. I also tried roasting, but wasn't that good. I worked for the 'Bou, Dilworth Coffee in Charlotte, and now call Batdorf & Bronson Coffee in Atlanta home. I train in espresso, and help people open coffeehouses and cafes. I also help with social marketing, and boosting coffee business. I am a member of the SCAA's Professional Development Committee/Espresso, and am also the current chair of the Barista Guild.
I also couple-skate with my loving wife of seven years from time to time. (But only on the slow songs, like Bryan Adams or Jon Secada.)
About My Company:
Batdorf & Bronson is old school in a good way, roasting excellent and amazing coffees for the past 24 years. They were one of the first to trade directly with farmers, building relationships, and investing in their lives. They are a certified Organic roaster, also offering Fair Trade offerings. They are based out of Olympia, WA, but also operate a roastery in Atlanta, which is where I work out of. I work with an amazing group of people there, like Mike Ferguson, heck all of them.
What is your favorite thing about the coffee industry?
Hi Jason,
Thanks for adding me as a friend. I love Georgia, I was just there in October helping train some people that opened a shop in Cordele near Albany and I have a good friend near Atlanta too.
What coffees are exciting you now? I have been cupping some truly great coffees from Brazil..the Cerrado and S. Minas regions..very chocolaty (is that a word?) and a good FT/Org peaberry too!
You know, I realized that you were in Charlotte and not Ga. anymore..right about the time I hit the "add comment" button.
Papua New Guinea is one of my favorite coffees, underrated in past years but really finding enthusiastic support now. The floral-fruity flavors with full, syrupy body make it a great espresso blender, I particularly like the Madan estate from New Guinea Traders.
bravo for number palates, mine r wbc 2007, not as cool as your ones but...,anyway, keep on good work even we dont know each other, as for cup tasting, tim wendelboe is doing weekly that for costumers in his caffe so contact him and youll find new stuff, he is just great, so dont worry about starshit and mcchickenshit coffee, vivabarista!
hey! just trying to meet new people :) you shoudl def. compete! its alot of fun and a great learning experience :) will you accept me as a frend :) lol
Alive, but a bit tired !!! I've had 2 really fun days. So many details, man! I have 2 great motivated baristas and one .... um....not so motivated...every day's an adventure! Thanks for asking. So how did you transition from owning/operating to training/consulting?
What a cool career path...I think the thing about coffee is there is so much to learn, and so many ways to apply it. I love this retail side of it for now, and the busy busy...but there is so much out there to do ,coffee wise....anyway, thanks for the comments, and the support!
I think you have the wrong coffee shop....we are in downtown woodestock, there is another shop the one you are talking about so you need to come see ours, we serve better coffee!
Hey Jason! Have a great time at the party...I have a dinner scheduled already. I would love to meet you and some of the other "southerners"...so let me know how we can make that happen!
Good to meet you too man, I am down and around the Triangle area a couple times a year. I will eventually make it to our (CCC) training center in Charlotte, so I will let you know if and when I come to town.
Ahh the darth Sibilla....very cool machine...
come back in the spring when the gardens are blooming and the trees are green....we are kinda in our dormant state right now...except for espresso of course.
Likewise, it was great meeting you. Thanks for finding me at the show to introduce your self, and thanks for keeping me in the loop on all of the SE Barista Exchange stuff.
Actually, Starbucks holds the copyright to all holiday minions. The Easter Bunny took a break from having caramel machiattos with Santa and Cupid. The Atlanta Olympic mascot, Izzy, was trying to get in but they wouldn't let him.
Thanks! It's great to have a forum like this. I'm sure as time goes on and I get closer to starting business I'll be seeking the advice of the lovely people here.
Hey "Jace"! kinda slow in the middle of the day (it's a residential neighborhood) but things are picking up. I should be breaking even by summer. That's the goal . I've been trying to figure out how to pump out my 4 shot lattes faster. :-) I'll upload my beginner's latte art to show ya! How are you ?
The Misty Valley is one coffee from the mill of Abdula Bagersh, and Biloya is another. You probably had the Misty, which is described as blueberry and sometimes ripe stawberry. The Biloya is more like getting hit in face with a wet sack full of ripe strawberries.
