About Me:
My name is Jason Dominy. I live in Atlanta. I have been in coffee for more than 14 years. I have opened and ran two of my own coffeehouses. I also tried roasting, but wasn't that good. I worked for the 'Bou, Dilworth Coffee in Charlotte, and now call Batdorf & Bronson Coffee in Atlanta home. I train in espresso, and help people open coffeehouses and cafes. I also help with social marketing, and boosting coffee business. I am a member of the SCAA's Professional Development Committee/Espresso, and am also the current chair of the Barista Guild.
I also couple-skate with my loving wife of seven years from time to time. (But only on the slow songs, like Bryan Adams or Jon Secada.)
About My Company:
Batdorf & Bronson is old school in a good way, roasting excellent and amazing coffees for the past 24 years. They were one of the first to trade directly with farmers, building relationships, and investing in their lives. They are a certified Organic roaster, also offering Fair Trade offerings. They are based out of Olympia, WA, but also operate a roastery in Atlanta, which is where I work out of. I work with an amazing group of people there, like Mike Ferguson, heck all of them.
What is your favorite thing about the coffee industry?
The coffees. The people. The love.

I'm just getting ready for a trip to Detroit tomorrow. Making coffee, reading, writing, and arithmetic.

or did you mean why "bones" who knows... that's a mystery that will remain unsolved
  • Joe Stormer

mostly just dreams about owls (and word has it that owls are bad omens . . . yikes)

how are things going out in your neck of the woods? what secrets are you coaxing out of the espresso?
  • Brendon Parsons

Hey Jason, it's pretty lame down here in South Florida. I have a couple of shops I'm trying to inspire, though. I drop by every now and then to roast coffee and demonstrate latte art, but otherwise, this is a coffee void.

By the way, I tried to stop by Dilworth this past November. Did you guys move? The building looked abandoned; I think it was a Saturday afternoon. I was dying for coffee while I was in Gastonia for the Thanksgiving Holiday. The shop that used to be there closed.
  • christos manousidis

You have 2 shops, and you hear good music as a see...you have to keep up the good work that you create.

Well I am meeting Wednesday with some people in regards to doing a shop in a brand name book store.
    Cross your fingers !
  • Chris Berola

No, any dealings that I have had in the past with parisi guys have been in passing nothing very concrete. Mostly I have dealt with PT's guys and now alot with the Kaldi's crew.
  • WMitro

I dont really have a place nor time to practice. Kinda sucks so it will probably be a while before I can actually compete, other then a competion at in house.
  • Aaron Duckworth

You mean that jerk Gregory Kolsto? I'm kidding, Gregory is a breath of fresh air and I really enjoy his perspective on things. We approach coffee from different ends of the spectrum, so we see and evaulate things differently but learn from each other. We get along fantastically. Great guy. If you ever make it in to KC, let one of us know (more likely him) and we'll get together for some coffee craziness.

    Hello back to you!
  • Emma Minigan

    Why thank you Mr. Dominy!

  • Scott Jenkins

    hey man.
i'm just tryin' to provid good coffee to my fellow hillbillies.
    how's things across the mountains?
hope your weekend was easy on the cold.
  • Sandy Hon

    Hey jason,
You know Gregory at Parisi?? He's a really cool cookie. We like him a lot.
  • Chris Dodson

VA is doing well! Though, the cold does not agree with me. I see the low temperature merely as an excuse to drink more espressos! Is it any warmer to the south???
  • Steve Lanphier

    Hey there Jason,
Things are good in the Pacific NW, How's things wid you in beautiful NC?
  • Ben Helfen

Humorously enough, i'm not a huge Yeah Yeah Yeahs fan anymore... but i still love that album cover....

And who told you i had good taste in music? Just curious who i need to pay off for saying that about me...

There's too much music to list.... but to name a few off the top of my head....Lykke Li, Burial the new Magnetic Fields album, Aphex Twin, Róisín Murphy, Digitalism, Boyz Noise, Kylie MInogue, the Field and Gui Boratto have all been in heavy heavy rotation recently. Here's my last.fm as well. http://www.last.fm/user/benexhale

I'm even more of a music nerd than i am a coffee nerd.
  • Sandy Hon

ahhh, yes. THE Gregory Kolsko. AKA GRK. He is a fabulous guy. Shaved his beard you know. not so scary anymore.
are you planning to be at the MARBJ?
  • grk

hey, all this slander and mush! What's a man got to do to defend himself?!? Um, I think you are fantastic, and special. I am excited to see you have found your niche of passion. I reckon we'll see each other in a couple months, yeah? xo
  • christos manousidis

    we one day sort man...hahaha
Thing is ok here in greece, we have nice weather and we mostly drink cold coffee.
    e-viva coffee
  • Ben Helfen

Hell yeah, dude, i love me some good Europop. Kylie is awesome. I have no shame in admitting that. haha

And yeah, definitely a big Sigur Rós fan. They played Symphony Hall in Atlanta a number of years ago and it's by far the best show i've ever been to.
  • The GreenBean Coffee Espresso & Tea LLC

Would love to. I'll call you shortly.
  • Dale B. Donchey

sir, i am the crunk. I'm doing good, how are you?
  • Tim Noble

    What's going on Jason?
I'm just churnin' my way through a lb. of Zoka's Palamino, working on the art of the latte on this beautiful spring day- it's nearing 70 degrees in Philly.
I'm thinking of throwing my hat in the ring at the NE Barista Jam in Easton in a couple days... you know, for the experience of being ridiculed by my supposed peers.
The problem with throwdowns is, I'm always half in the bag by the time they start. We should have an industry rule that throwdowns have to take place first thing in the evening. I would rule, be that the case.
No, I wouldn't, but still, I'd do better.
Alright, off to the store for more milk.
    Later, Jay.

Hey, It was great to get to meet you. Sorry our conversation had to be over the worst coffee you've ever had. Unfortunately, at 9pm the options are rather limited in Asheville. The Drip, Caffiend, and World Coffee are really the only options. We hope to change that. Our plan is to offer great coffee into the wee hours of the morning. We will most certainly be in touch as we always have questions.
  • Elizabeth Korzelik

Thanks! Totally not my car through :( It is my dream car and want one so bad! Jealous that you have a MINI although I can't say I agree with the plates!
  • Brady

'Sup? Thanks again for the call on the Rwanda... tasty stuff. Hope you guys have fun Sunday - wish I could be there!
  • Valerie

Yeah I love the "ville" I find all sorts of great inspiration in the local restaurant scene downtown for coffee drinks and such. Thanks for the welcome!
  • mw townsend

Bongo Java is great, Bob is the man!
  • Aida Batlle

Hey Jason! Thanks! I am very excited to be a part of this!
  • Shawn

Many thanks for the greeting. I was just goin' over your blog aboot the CoffeeFest D.C. and grinning to myself, thinking aboot my similar experiences in Seattle. How cool was that latte art class?

Anywho, if you're in MPLS for the SCAA show, I'm happy to make some suggestions. I doubt if our shop will be open but we should have our bar set up.
  • Bunk Price

    Jason,

Not alot going on here in AL at the moment. Just sitting on the couch with my wife relaxing after a busy week at our shop.

It is always good to meet new friends and appreciate counting you as one on here. Tell me about yourself. What is going down with the coffee industry in Charlotte?
  • Janice

Thanks! You seem to be well into the coffee industry. Any chance you want to offer some words of wisdom to a start-up coffeehouse?
  • James Spano

Doing well Mr. Dominy. I´m in Antigua right now, soaking in the coffee and remembering my last visit.
  • Instaurator

Hey Jason thanks for the kind words. By the way Starbucks has forced up the price of the coffee I buy in Papua New Guinea but that's not a bad thing for the growers!
  • Jeff Taylor

My KC Royals hat just doesn't inspire that kind of passion! LOL
  • Brady

Hey Jason! That pound of BC is starting to get old. Let me know what you want to do.
  • Sandy Hon

    Hi Jason,
I look very forward to meeting you as well!

  • Nick Griffith

Get ready for something big... Ventti Big.
  • Brady

Hi Jason! Thanks again for stopping out last week (and bringing that Yirg, good stuff!). I hope you enjoyed your coffee. We're continuing to refine our french press process (the new sediment screens help), and have backed off on the dosage slightly. I think the cup is a lot more restrained and balanced now, and look forward to your feedback on your next visit. Lots of curiosity from customers about the "brew-to-order" menu too, but not many takers yet. We'll see how it develops. Hope to see you Saturday.
