About Me:
My name is Jason Dominy. I live in Atlanta. I have been in coffee for more than 14 years. I have opened and ran two of my own coffeehouses. I also tried roasting, but wasn't that good. I worked for the 'Bou, Dilworth Coffee in Charlotte, and now call Batdorf & Bronson Coffee in Atlanta home. I train in espresso, and help people open coffeehouses and cafes. I also help with social marketing, and boosting coffee business. I am a member of the SCAA's Professional Development Committee/Espresso, and am also the current chair of the Barista Guild.
I also couple-skate with my loving wife of seven years from time to time. (But only on the slow songs, like Bryan Adams or Jon Secada.)
About My Company:
Batdorf & Bronson is old school in a good way, roasting excellent and amazing coffees for the past 24 years. They were one of the first to trade directly with farmers, building relationships, and investing in their lives. They are a certified Organic roaster, also offering Fair Trade offerings. They are based out of Olympia, WA, but also operate a roastery in Atlanta, which is where I work out of. I work with an amazing group of people there, like Mike Ferguson, heck all of them.
What is your favorite thing about the coffee industry?
Greetings! Great meeting you in the derrrty Atl this week. Next time I'm in Charlotte I'll stop by and check you the world of Dilworth Coffee! Keep that southern coffee culture strong.
Hey Jason, I'm in the preliminary stages of planning a coffee tour of the Southeast. I'll have a week or two in May between school letting out and starting my internship at the Lab. I'll definately be dropping in on Octane, Dilworth, and CounterCulture. Any recommendations for stops along the way? Any coffee in South Carolina?
Hey Jason, I'm currently planning my Coffee Domination Tour 2008. Current plan: West Palm, FL to Octane in Atlanta, then Coffee and Creama in Greenville, Izzy's in Asheville, then coffee shops and roasters in Charlotte. I plan to finish the trip at the Counter Culture Lab on May 8th, for the Espresso Lab class. Originally, I was going to swing up to Duram, but it's just too much driving.
I'm going to post a more detailed iternary in the Southeast Coffee Group forum. If you have any suggestions, I'd love to hear them.
Hey Jason, I'll definately take up your offer of Wii, especially if the game is trick bowling. As for a place to stay, I'll probably be staying in Gastonia with family, for most of the time. My mom will be coming with me, to visit my grandfather. Don't worry, she likes coffee, too.
As for my detailed plans, check out my discussion in the SE Coffee Family Group, . I will likely change it up a bit, since it looks like the Counter Culture espresso lab on May 8th is full.
Ok. I worked for Faye and Clay about a year ago. Now I am in retail... but would LOVE to get back into coffee... shops around Charlotte are quite picky in regards to hiring someone with experience. They prefer someone new that they can train their way. I actually just turned in an application at Starbucks close to my house. That would probably be my best and easiest method of getting back into coffee plus I am already in the system. lol.
Thanks Jason! I may take you up on that help very soon! I haven't been on here very much. It's a little cumbersome to figure out at first, and I'm really busy with the opening for BacInTyme! But thanks for the hospitality!!!
Hey. I'm working today until 5:30. I don't know how long you will be at the roastery but give me a call if you will still be around after then. I work at Southpark so the drive is pretty short.
Jaso,
I see you live in the charlottte area. I'm only about a 100 miles south of you in sumter, SC. I was in Monroe last week visiting a coffee shop. I'm not familiar with whcih shops are the best in Charlotte aea. I have recently made contact with Dilworth's.
No, I stopped in at a Java Grandee in Monroe. I did not know about the other one you mentioned. You said they use your companies coffee. Which company are you with? If you are with Dilworth, I have made contact with them about possible relationship with Dilworth. The person I spoke to is suppose to get back with me on Monday or Tuesday.
So far, I have a couple of potential locations identified. I have not signed a lease yet. I am trying to decide to go independent, licensee or franchise.
I am also looking at display cabinets, counters. I have seen some very nice modular cabinets. I suspect they are quite expensive. They would also have to be shipped in by common carrier. The I would have to get them installed. I believe it might be just as good if not better perhaps to have a local cabinet maker build the cabinets/counters on site and install them.
I have a pretty good idea as to the equipment I want to use. I have to also look at roasters in the area as well. I know from what I have seen so far that there are several in North Carolina. I found out there is a roaster in Columbia, South Carolina also.
It seems the more I learn, the more it seems I do not know.
Hey man,
I'm honestly surprised you remembered me. Things are going well. We're getting ramped up for coffee school this summer and in the midst of getting machine/equipment grants to get the show up and running. In about four weeks Deferio moves here. How is the dirty south?
Very good, sir. And for you? I'm just busting my hump getting ready for coffeewithaduck.com to launch this fall. It's keeping me busy. What are you up to?
Jason, hows it going man! you'll have to keep me updated on how things are going with the adoption. I know (well, I've heard) it can be a long process.
such flattery will get you everywhere! Thanks for the encouragment. I think that we'll have to have you come out and teach for coffee school sometime. It'd be fun
Sorry I didn't get to catch up with you....I must have just left and got your message too late....glad you got to see the place, but you must come back so we can hang out.
Hey... glad you were able to make it by, and yeah, yesterday had me running around like crazy. Sorry we didn't get a chance to chat. See you again soon, I hope!
Hey Jason
Saturday is looking like a great day! I was reminded that Saturday is also Emma's birthday so later in the afternoon would be great. Nikki and I are looking forward to meeting you and trying some of that fantastic espresso.
im back, i did bad on the end, 44th...well, you always have something to learn, i was elsewhere while competing and it reflected on my scores but on the last day, i was chose for barista's choice award and it means so much to me, at least i came to baristas hearts, means so much to me cos i was so in bad mood, thanks for all
Hey Jason,
Please give me a call sometime today or tonight. Looks like everything is a "GO" for Saturday. I tried to send you an e-mail through the BExchange and it wanted to send the message to a different user. Go figure.
