Tell us more about your coffee shop or barista skills.
I currently have two coffee shops in the same town, one is in a historic 100 year old downtown building, the second one is on the other end of town, in a new building with a drive-thru. I've been to several Coffee Fest seminars and love every minute of them. My daughter has competed twice in the Latte Art contest at Coffee Fest. I've met many wonderful people like Jack from JP's, Matt, Brett from Java Java, the entire Dillanos Roasting team and many other coffee lover's too numerous to mention! I've had experience remodeling two historic buildings, one buildout of a newer location, Coffee Fest, Latte Art, Landlord/lease issues, employee issues, competitors to deal with, and the normal lovely things about owning your own business, and "living the American Dream.... haha". I've learned alot and can speak from real, every day experience.... the good, the bad and the ugly!
What cities or countries are you interested in traveling to?
I've never been to Seattle........ (Portland, Oregan is the closest).... I want to travel to Hawaii to a Kona plantation/farm, and anywhere else in the world where coffee is grown. I would also love to visit Italy and Paris. I love the ocean and anywhere tropical.... I just want to go to St. Somewhere.........anywhere there are palm trees.
About Me:
Married for 27 years, three children, well actually four because my oldest daughter just got married and we love him like a son...... I love to travel anywhere I can hear the ocean and I love the coffee world, who knew there was more to coffee than Folgers, Maxwell House and Chock full O' Nuts.....? And I am a true Parrot Head. Nothing puts a smile on your face like kicking back to a Jimmy Buffett CD, except maybe Kenney Chesney.............. "I am just a hula-girl at heart."
About My Company:
Established in 2003. First, local hometown gourmet coffee shop. No automatic machines for us, we make espresso the real way...

    Hey there, Lisa!

So great to see you on here...I'm glad you found me! Your store front looks great!

Hope all is well and you have a Happy New Year!
  • Wilson Hines

Next time I am in NW OH I will have to change my route from running through Van Wert to making Defiance a passing point. We couldn't find good coffee to save our lives a couple weeks ago!
  • Brett Habenicht

S'up my sista? I'll shoot you some ideas for Hawaii after the new year. Talk to you soon.
  • Wilson Hines

Oh yes, my friend. I know right where Defiance is located. Van Wert isn't very truck friendly. I tried to visit one local VW shop. I had my four year old with me and she kept saying, "Daddy, let's get some espresso." Well, I felt led to do something. When your child is in need, you want to help them out, right? So, I knew of a small shop in VW and I tried parking on a side street. I wasn't in the way of anybody at all. But, before I could set the brakes on the truck, a VW police ocifer (officer) pulls up and starts hollering at me, literally. I could only think, "...OMG, I am going to go to jail for telling this #*&@^ where to go right here and now; I can only hope they don't handcuff my four year old, as well LOL." But, I kept my cool. He must have been having a bad day. After I explained that I would just "be on my merry way" he cooled off. So, I missed the coffee in VW. Or did I? Is "The Perks Cafe" any good in VW?

Any way, next time around, I will go through Defiance. Maybe the ocifers there are nicer!

thanks for adding me. to anwser your question, my shop is about 60 miles south of Seaside. We are between Depoe Bay and Lincoln City.
  • Colleen

When I was in Definance a while ago I stopped in one of your shops & had a great cup of coffee. It's so nice to be away from home, but still get a great cup of coffee.
  • Colleen

That Aspen closed about 3 weeks ago. I've only heard rumors from our milk man. I think thye got a new owner. The milk man said they were going to a bar-b-que restaurant. But don't quote me on that...I got my info from the milk man.
  • Colleen

I would love to have a cup of coffee with you. I usually don't have a set schedule, so let me know when you'll be in the Fort & we can make a plan.
  • Colleen

    Hey Lisa,
My email is not working at the moment. You can get our office number on our website: www.highergroundsonline.com. John is the one you would want to talk to.
And yes, we do roast all our own beans here in Ft. Wayne.
  • Wilson Hines

    FINALLY!
I am in Napoleon today. I think I will drop in on you folks in Defiance.
  • Wilson Hines

    Hey Lisa,
Sorry for the slow response, as on the mobile phone, Barista Exchange sucks!LOL!
Yeah, I know it was way too late of notice. Your downtown shop is fantastic. I love the interior and the deck on the back. You can't ask for a better "coffee shop" atmosphere. The shop by the mall was great too, very fitting for the environment it was in. Lisa, I think, pulled a good shot and made me a capp. She seems to like what she is doing, said she had been there for 1.5 yrs.
  • Taylor

We just opened August 8th. Yes the brick was very hard to clean up and expose. Thanks your shop looks very classy as well. I will have to make a trip up there some day to check it out.

Your shop looks beautiful--we too have an old building(Stoney Creek Roasters in Cedarville). Your web site is great too. Stop by if you are ever down this way.
