About Me:
I began my coffee career at the now closed It's a Grind/Mug-Shot in Highland Michigan. I must say I was drawn into the high end coffee industry by the passionate baristas and the atmosphere at the Ugly Mug in Ypsilanti, MI. While traveling around Michigan after the demise of The Mug-Shot, I experienced many different styles of coffee shops: independent (cafe 1923), corporate(Asian Village Detroit), good (MCB), and bad(fill in the blank_____), and was moved to take my passion to a new level, which happens to be my main aspiration in the coffee world, I spent a year at Kozy Koffee in Highland Michigan learning, researching, and working on all aspects of the wonder that is "Coffee!" I spent nearly a year and a half working with all the great peoples at Anodyne Coffee Roasting Company in Milwaukee Wisconsin, and can now be found brewing up love at Madcap Coffee in Grand Rapids MI.
Whenever you come across those descriptions for the different brews you guys sell, just start emailing them to me. One at a time or not. It's all good bro.
On behalf of all roasters, I deeply apologize for yours not showing up. How's the Colombia Huila, (los naranjos de san augustin...saw the bag hanging from tha wall). I think roasters are a bunch of assholes almost as bad as baristas. I would never invite one but then again those public cuppings are a pain in the ass. Less heat on the milk will help your art but what the fuck do i know. Keep in touch my man. I will be judging the GLRBC so maybe I will run into you in chicago?
I use a 20 oz pitcher. my technique is to get that "tick, tick, tick" from the steam wand with a counter clockwise motion until the outside of the pitcher gets warm (i hold handle with right hand and place left hand on pitcher opposite wand to feel the actual milk temp and not the steam wand hot-spot), then raise pitcher for that gravely sound until pitcher gets uncomfortable to touch (as long as your hand isn't wet), which is 150 like clockwork. that's a good temp for art but may be too cool for a beverage if the cup isn't pre-heated. but like I said, I don't know shit. I'm a roaster. :) Nobody makes money in coffee unless they are in the top 5% so figure out, "am I now or will I ever be in the top 5%, or do I love it so much I don't care if I lose money, I'm still doing it". The overhead will kill you. But if you have something special and really, really good coffee every time, you have a chance. But you know all this already. Peace.
here's my 15 minutes of fame and might give you the idea in case you want to try out the pursuit of perfection: www.rapidgrowthmedia.com (look for the video).
I will be here until 7 or 8. we operate as an informal tasting bar so if we're not here we're not open. But if you call me I can hang around 616-780-7777.
I'm sending 5 pound today. Email me your address to kurt@rowstercoffee.com. I can either paypal invoice or include in package. Would love to include 2 pounds of Kenya AA and 2 pounds of the Costa Rica too. I will pay shipping.
UPS ground went out today. I would press the Costa and the Kenya but if you can't make sure you use a minimum of 3.5 oz of beans to make it sing but I trust you will do it right.
Hey Eric,
We have a work van, so you wont need a car. As far as recommendations go on apartments, I'd say anything in Bay View should be cool for you. Check Craigslist cause a lot of people in Bay View post their rentals there. Matt will be calling you today or tomorrow. So far, we feel good about it and just need to make sure you do as well. Most of the staff live in walking distance from the cafe/roastery, so you'll be in good company. Call me if you want, I can answer any other questions.
we're about to go see Animal Collective together. I only hope that we get really sweaty and create some new fragrance designed of espresso grounds, roasting ash, organic beer, and man hair.....yea.....we're that cool homie
Yo Eric,
Glad you got the word about the Milwaukee preliminary throwdown.
It's going to be a practice to be sure we can roll smoothly with the live judging and streaming of a throwdown. The actual Milwaukee vs Chicago isn't scheduled yet, but should be soon.
See you Fri night!

Yo, thanks for sending those tees and what not. The coffees were awesome! I especially liked that limoncillo. Great job guys. Im thinking about taking a few days off this July. Maybe around my bday?
Im gunna go to chicago, but i would love to go see you guys. I'll keep you posted dawg.
Hey Eric, thanks for adding Coffee Kids. Say hi to Steven for us. I lived down in Bay View for a while. Oh yeah, check out our Web site and let us know if you or Anodyne would like to get involved in helping coffee-farming families.
