barista, barista trainer, coffee roaster, home barista, coffee enthusiast

    Portland, Oregon US

How many years have you been in the industry?

    Four years

If you are a barista or shop, are you interested in a barista exchange with another coffee shop/barista?

    yes

Tell us more about your coffee shop or barista skills.

My current shop is Public Domain Coffee, which is in the heart of downtown Portland, Oregon. We are Coffee Bean International's showcase shop for all of their specialty coffees. The one and only shop. We are also the only shop in Portland that possesses a Slayer espresso machine. We also have a Synesso Hydra. Both exceptional machines and made in the US. Being in downtown means that we are a heavy volume shop. I possess the skills necessary to efficiently make consistently high quality drinks under high stress situations, while maintaining a clean workspace. This is expected of every barista here at Public Domain.

What cities or countries are you interested in traveling to?

I am looking for a barista and/or roasting opportunity in Detroit Michigan or Ann Arbor Michigan.

    About Me:

My name is James Nathan Hayes. I have been in the coffee industry for four years now. I moved to Portland Oregon from Amarillo Texas over three years ago to pursue a career as a barista. I spent my first two years here paying my dues before I finally made it to the specialty coffee level. I started at Public Domain Coffee back in May of 2013, and I am still currently on staff. I have recently taken the initiative to learn how to roast coffee as well. On top of also learning how to maintain and repair various brands of espresso machines and grinders. I'm always looking for ways to improve my skills and acquire new ones as well. There's always something new to learn and that is one of the many reasons why I love what I do.

    About My Company:

Public Domain Coffee is owned by Coffee Bean International. It is located in the heart of downtown Portland Oregon. We are their showcase shop for all of their specialty coffee.

What is your favorite thing about the coffee industry?

That there is constant progression and you never stop learning.
