barista, barista trainer, coffee enthusiast
Where are you located? ( City and Country )
Coeur d'Alene, Idaho USA
How many years have you been in the industry?
8
If you are a barista or shop, are you interested in a barista exchange with another coffee shop/barista?
yes
Tell us more about your coffee shop or barista skills.
I am a skilled barista. I have worked in a variety of settings. I am always looking to learn more about coffee and fine tune my skills. I am a trainer and have had the difficult but rewarding task of helping open a new cafe' (menu and training for all) and also the transition of new ownership. I am now most interested in learning as much as I can about the coffee itself, the growers and the growing regions.
What cities or countries are you interested in traveling to?
I would love to travel to Central or South America. Basically I am unattached and open to travel.
About Me:
Inteligent, hard working, dedicated, but not naive. I have been the work horse and done my time as such. I am looking for a coffee experience where coffee is given dedication it deserves.
What is your favorite thing about the coffee industry?
coffee reflects itself through life and life reflects itself through coffee.

Kona Report.

Posted on January 18, 2009 at 12:24am 0 Comments

I wish I had already uploaded the photos off my camera, but I am too lazy to do that right now so bear with me. Imagine simply a cardboard box with a light green faded doma coffee roasters logo on it and another ripped open box with a black and orange amazon logo. Next to the doma box a beautiful bag of Organic Brazil NOSSA SENHORA DE FATIMA and a new 32oz Bodem french press with the unshatterable beaker (because I always break em). Next to the Amazon box four new books including The Bhagivad… Continue

Hula Daddy

So finally I feel connected in the coffee world again. I no longer feel so distant and lost. Hula Daddy coffee of Holualua submitted a natural processed coffee (Kona Sweet, light roast) to the folks at coffee review and receivedan amazing 97 out of 100 point score. link

Holualua is directly east of me. Just up the mountain. I have driven by the tasting room of Hula Daddy a few times. Who was to know that they had put into works a combination of love, care,… Continue

Kona Coffee Cultural Festival. . . an outsiders view

Posted on November 5, 2008 at 11:57pm 1 Comment

So I have been planning this trip to Hawai'i (the big Island -not Ouahu) for quite a while now. I arrived yesterday. Election day. Congratulations Obama. :) Well it just so happens that the Kona Coffee Cultural Festival starts on the 7th. I have a brochure here next to me. I've kinda flipped through the pages to get a feel for what is going on, but its somewhat confusing. Two main social events stand out for sure. Both on Saturdays. There is a Miss Kona Coffee Scholarship Pageant on the 8th.… Continue

Hey Mike. From what I've heard, Kona Coffee and Tea on Hwy 19 between the airport and the city has the best to offer in coffee, while Lava Java on Alii way has "espresso". I spent a few days with Miguel Meza of Hula Daddy Coffee, and we got to cup the first "official" batch of comercially Natural Processed" Kona, which was a treat to say the least. Also, over in by the black sand beaches about an hour and half out, I spent the day with Lorrie Obra on her farm, who is experimenting with dry pulp fermentation techniques. I'm leaving tomorrow morning at 6, otherwise I'd love to meet up with you and show you around. Good luck finding decent coffee in Kona, and enjoy the beautiful weather!

Hi Mike, I am sorry to say it but yet again I can not download the file. Its probably due to the slow connection speed my end I suspect. Could you email me at alun@merdekacoffee.com? Cheers

thanks for the comments, Mike. Yeah, it will be a challenge, but I've worked in the F&B and hospitality industry for many, many years. Also, I took a great course from Matt at the ABC school that helped immensely. Definitely send your sister by once I open... I'll be sure to let EVERYONE know when that happens!

I don't think its to hard to get a work permit. I have an immigration company doing all the work, so its been real easy for me.

My internship was with Mike Roberts in Panajachel Guatemala. Check out his site and there's a section on internships. http://www.crossroadscafepana.com/
I rented my own little apartment that was about $10 a day. I ate almost all of my meals with Mike and his family, they are very generous and have a great sense of hospitality. Check out the site, email him, and you can work out something to fit your needs if you're interested. I personally had a fantastic experience and think it was worth every penny.
