I would like to thank Matt and the folks at the ABC School for starting the Barista Exchange networking site, but more importantly I would like to thank Matt for allowing "Enthusiast" such as myself to participate in a real and meaningful way.

I know some of the professionals out there probably think that the site potentially could be "hijacked," for a lack of better words, by the enthusiast. With sites like the Barista Guild or Coffeed.com (which I peruse daily) providing exclusive access by "invitation only," the professional is guaranteed not to have to deal with peons, such as my poor self. So, therefore, I hope that this doesn't slow down the potential participation of the coffee professional on this fabulous exchange. With the folks that have been signing up lately, it would seem to have not been an effect at all.

I am grateful for the opportunity to communicate even more directly than on coffeegeek.com, home-barista.com or other sites where many of these same professionals communicate, post and respond. Especially from the standpoint that the wife and myself are working on business plans for a coffee shop we can learn from others in a way standard "forums" just can't teach. Also, the Barista Guild will not take us as members yet (understandably) and that slows our learning down (I believe) as well.

I hope you all will visit my mainstay blog at http://wilsonhines.wordpress.com. Have a great New Years Holiday!

I agree with Wilson. Matt, this IS a great thing. Being so hard-core exclusive is a great way to build a box that can be tough to think outside of.

A community is at it's best when all voices are heard. Yes, even the ones that are not the coolest or most knowledgeable. Sometimes the best answers are formed from the worst questions.

I hope that this great site grows into a welcoming meeting spot where the hard issues of the coffee industry can be adressed by it's most respected professionals. And where newcomers can feel comfortable to foster the love that is COFFEE.

Let's make the B.E. the best it can be.... um.. Wow. That sounded good when I thought it, corny as hell when I typed it...

Thanks Wilson for the kind words. I do want this site to be a resource for all people who love coffee. It's great to have such a diverse group to exchange ideas and information.
