What is your position in the coffee industry?
barista, manager, coffee shop owner, barista trainer, coffee roaster, industry professional, consultant
Where are you located? ( City and Country )
www.transcendcoffee.com Edmonton, Canada
How many years have you been in the industry?
12+
If you are a barista or shop, are you interested in a barista exchange with another coffee shop/barista?
yes
Tell us more about your coffee shop or barista skills.
We have, at our shop, a barista's dream...A clover, a 2-group synesso, a 2 group lamarzocco GB5, a 7kilo Deitrich roaster, 20+ coffees, a new coffee lab with all manner of funky brewing paraphernalia and super-keen staff.
As a barista I have worked with a number of very different cafe environments, machines, brooms, customers. I have my own tamper.
What cities or countries are you interested in traveling to?
I posess a canadian passport and would be interested in working anywhere in the world, including elsewhere in Canada. As I am the Manager/Chief of culture realistically my time away from the shop would be limited. That said, I am amazed at how much great work happens when barista's guest even for an afternoon behind the bar. Its winter here at the moment so someplace warmer would be outstanding. On an educational level, it would be amazing to go to a producing country.
About Me:
I have worked with coffee going on 12 years, about the last third being aware of what I was doing. I have been brought in to work as chief of culture/ trainer/head barista. I competed at the Canadian National Barista Competition this year. Heaven is smoking a Solomon Cuaba and an espresso (Single Origin Harrar) mmmm.
About My Company:
We are closing in on our second year of business and growing continually. We are a roastery/cafe committed to raising the bar on coffee. We do tastings, brewing classes, and we hosted our first Jam back in October. On the business front we do a combination of wholesale, through the door retail, and a growing online business. We are located In Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. Working here has been interesting as we are really building a market that has no reference for "third wave" coffee.

Hey Andrew.
You mentioned when you were out here that you had some Melitta #4 gold filters...Any left kicking around the shop? I could use a couple.
Lemme know!

Calgary is starting to bustle a bit. They have a Cafe artigiano downtown that is always pretty good. A place called Bumpy's that I haven't actually been to but their latte art seems to be pretty top notch. That also in the same nieghborhood you should check out the newly opened Kawa Cafe...Really nice place and awesome people...If you pop out to Cochrane Java Jamboree is doing coffee rightly.
Ummm...Jeff is a dude pulling shots at a place I stumbled onto on Granville Island. A little punchier in an espresso than I would go but the passion is there...
Cheers Andrew

Andrew...I think you're my new hero!
Glad you made it out this way.
Who's this Jeff guy from Vangroovy anyway?
I'm in AB next week for my wife's grandmother's 100th birthday in Calgary...Where should I go (other than Phil and Sebo's)?
Lemme know.

Hey Andrew,

Thanks for stopping by at Agro this week and I hope you enjoyed your espresso. I checked out your Cafe's website and I must say, you spoil your baristas with both a Synesso and a GB5.

Unfortunately my trip has been postponed until next month but I am still coming out for another event July 4-6th so I'll defiantly stop by then

Thanks for the coffee it was great, as was the vibe of your place. I should register my complete jealousy of pulling espresso in such a beautiful place. I will be doing a complete posting on our bolg at the end of my trip. I will wear my new Tshirt behind our bar with a big silly grin.
Thanks again.

Hey Andrew, it'd be great to see you out here.

The Stick is outside of Victoria by about 40 minutes. Take the highway north towards Nanaimo and hit the Sooke/Port Renfrew Exit...It'll take you to Sooke Road (turn right - follow the signs). When you cross over a bigish little blue bridge you're in Sooke and there are opnly three traffic lights. Turn right at the third (at the Petro Canada) and then a fast left is Eustace Road. You'll see a sandwich board or two and my red and white VW van is parked across the street. Mornings are busy but call if you're lost 642-5635.

Hook up with Ken and Shane from Habit and drag those deadbeats out here too!

Also, check out 2% Jazz on DOuglas Stree in Vic...Discovery Coffee on Discovery in Vic, Cafe Fantastico.....There are more excellent shops but this'll get you started!

David

PS: try the Coffee Warbler for Cuban. ALso Origins/Hines. They're in Vancouver.

Andrew - Actually i have never had cuban coffee (Coffee from Cuba). considering the political issues in the US your best bet is to seek a Canadian source - for a full conatiner you may want to contact NJ Douek or RGC both in Monteal. For a small lot of roasted coffee try my friend Sevan Istanboulian at Mystique Coffee also in Montreal.

Now about the definition of "good" ........

Did you see the new group Coffee & Cigars? Let's try to begin posting some pairing data on the group.

All the best

Hello Andrew -

YES! Guilty as charged. I wrote the article for Smoke magazine about cigars and coffee. Unfortunately, the article was never posted online.

I love cigars, but have recently slowed my consumption so as not to affect my palate for cupping.

I found that as with coffee, cigars can have wonderful variety of flavors from sweet to spicy and a depth of body from thick and rich to thin. However it takes a good cigar for this experience, as many inexpensive cigars burn too hot to allow good flavor and aroma characters.

Andrew, thanks for the comments - you made my day!
