Short non-answer? Yes.

 

Not quite as short non-answer? There is no "best", just a collection of really good choices. It depends very much on what you are looking for and what your budget is. They each have their benefits and drawbacks... people that swear by them and people that would not put one on their bar.

 

Among high-quality grinders, it really comes down to ergonomics, speed, cost, and flavor profile (not necessarily in that order). I've been happy with Compak as a balance of those factors, but your priorities may lead you to a different answer.

Just my 2 cents.....I have a Compak K10 Conic Doserless and K10 Barista...both very good grinders and the pricing is more reasonable. Nothing against the others...heard nothing but good things about those as well.

I use an MDX as well and it's a really good, simple workhorse. Grinds fast enough and the stepless micrometric adjustment is sweet as well. It is an often overlooked quality grinder IMO.

And nobody wants to hear a broken record. If it's not worth your time don't reply, simple as that. One thing that gets annoying is "senior members" on various forums that think they're above helping others. I know most forums offer a SEARCH function, but lots of times that gets you nowhere, except skimming through useless crap for hours. If I wanted opinions I'd more than likely start a new thread if it was an older topic.

 

 Christian, as others have stated there is NO single best grinder or espresso machine or whatever. Consider hourly/daily volume anticipated, speed, space allocated, voltage requirements, budget, etc. and go from there. There is a big difference in want vs. need.

What I've noticed in wholesale locations we've placed various grinders in is that speed matters - cheaper grinders may (may!) grind accurately, but they might be sloooow. Consider that. I won't buy a grinder that I can't try, or have no experience with anymore. I got burned on a grinder that seemed like a great deal, but turned out to not meet my needs.

That'll teach me to surf home barista forums for retail coffee needs. :(

I have a Mazzer Mini E version with flat burrs , but I have heard a lot of good arguments for conical burrs, better better taste more flavour etc. Thats is why I have being looking at the Compak K10 which have had a lot of good reviews also compared to the Mazzer grinders, which should be the top of the line!

Based on videos I've seen the Mini E is terribly slow for what it is. It's touted as having 64mm burrs, but based on speed you'd never know it.

 

 Most seem to agree flat burrs bring out "bass" notes, meaning the chocolate/caramel sort of notes AND conicals bring out the "high" notes, meaning citrus, berry, etc.

 

 I think Mazzer is like La Marzocco in that maybe they were once King of the Hill and cutting edge, but now many other manufacturers have caught up making the playing field equal. Personally I'd go with a Compak because I think you will get more bang for the buck.
