I am looking at purchasing my first roaster.
It is a Diedrich IR-3 with automation. I f anyone has any advice, or experience with this roaster or this automation I would appreciate your input.

Why would automation on a IR machine an oxymoron? Also, I have heard complaints about poor customer service from every roaster manufacturer...as well as nice compliments.
James, the IR-3 is an older model, which in and of itself isn't necessarily bad, but I think there have been complaints about the heat exchangers on the IR-3's (don't exactly remember the issue, but you can probably do some searching). Also, as you would be buying used, any manufacturer would likely want you to pay for customer service, just a heads up.

Ike the diedrich for the fit and finish and it is a very durable machine. That said I never had a problem with the ambex. It was tough as nails also. The diedrich is much easier to maintain. I was in the habit of throughly cleaning after roasting. More difficult with the ambex. Hope this helps

I have an IR12 with the newer version of the software and hardware. I have had it operational since Feb 2011. I have never tried to use the automation. I am still learning to roast manually. Early on I spoke to a roaster that was not able to duplicate the results from a manual roast when he used the automation. In addition I spoke to two roasters at this years Roasters Retreat that roast on IR12's with automation. Both roasters were very satisfied with the results and both are well respected roasters. It appears that when using the automation you have about 2 minutes at the start to make any adjustments needed to assure that the roast remains on track. I hope to eventually use my automation but for now it is all manual. Hope this helps.

Great advice! I have not had the chance to test it yet. I will based on what you are saying. I t makes sense to me that if they do not take care of the machine it may need rebuilt.

Have you tested this IR3 throughly? The machine looks in need of a massive rehab. The beauty of the D iedrich machine is the ease of cleaning. My machine looks the same as it did when I uncrated it. If you purchase this one make sure everything that everything is working. Some people that do not keep things clean also do not perform routine maintenance. Check for bearing noise, drive chain, fan, motor, and of course all the electronics.
