Is any one using the Ipad as a POS system, or recommend good pos software that uses the the Ipad. I am shopping for POS system in Minnesota state and I haven't had much luck. Thanks in advance

After doing some research on iPad based systems we decided to go with Ambur (http://amburapp.com). Amazing software at an even better price! They are still a young company and the software could use a few more features but for that price and no monthly fees they are a great option.

For Kyala,  One of the things to consider when using any of the ipad / wireless device systems is if they are PCI compliant with the credit card system.  If not, then the possibility of higher fees / issues can come into play.

Hi Mike,

All of the compnaies I have researched are PCI compliant. I think now its becoming standard.

But,

this CC processing is really new to me. I am just starting out and have been researching different companies. The rates are astronomical (in my opinion)

Please can someone chime in and tell me if this is normal (or if my math is off)

Here's an example:

CC processing company 1.55% + .14cents per transaction.

I estimate that each transaction will be $5.

I estimate I will have about 200 transaction per day.

So... 5 x .0155 = 0775 + .14 = about .22 cents per transation

.22 cent x 200 = $44/day

$44/day x 6days/week =$264/week

$264/week x 4weeks = $1056/month!!!

$1056/month in transaction fees!!!!

Please tell me if this is a normal rate or can I do much better!

Thanks :-)

I wish I would have saw this post about 2 weeks earlier. I already purchase a software...But I do like the system so I can't complain to much.

You can probably do better, but any provider is going to require estimated transaction volume before you get real rates. Things to consider are your volume, average transaction amount and monthly fees. $.10 a transaction is standard,(it varies a little) and if your average sale is a low dollar amount, expect fees to be higher. The companies doing the processing adjust to make it profittable for them. I can offer advice on this if you'd like. Lazy day today... email (chris (at) the three it goes (dot) com)... I type it like that on forums to try and reduce spam. Hope you get it worked out.

Kyla,  as to PCI - a lot of them are not compliant.  Unless they are listing on the https://www.pcisecuritystandards.org/approved_companies_providers/v... stire then they are not compliant - no matter what they may tell you.   This is a gigantic pain in the butt for us over the last couple years as it is not as easy to be approved as it seems.

Of course - you can get around most of that with a side terminal but it's another piece of equipment on the counter.

Your system looks pretty decent. Most of the solutions look too complicated for our kind of operation. I have a few questions:

Does it also do a kitchen (or better said, a espresso machine) display screen that the barista can tick off finished items?

Will it work without internet connection?

Michael

I was interested in the revel systems until Jen Robberts started plugging it. It's a pity when company representatives ruin an objective forum.

I wrote a cafe point of sale system that uses an iphone or ipod touches for waiters to take orders from customers and then has an imac server that runs multiple receipt printers (for kitchen, bar and til) to print dockets. We've been using it in my cafe for a year...

http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/order-manager/id440670149?mt=12

http://itunes.apple.com/app/order-remote/id440429588?mt=8

If you don't run a drive thru or need kitchen printers then Square Cash Register is the way to go. Free app, and Square doesn't have a swipe charge their % is higher but for the small transaction amount that coffee shops typically have the effective rate is much cheaper. We use it as a backup system for someone without a drive thru it would be ideal, even has a bunch of reporting features.

Another one to check out is Salesvu.com. Free app, and lower rates than Square. Has the same limitations as you've mentioned for a drive thru and kitchen printers. From what I have been told they are working on the printer issue to be able to have customers in a drive thru sign a receipt and not the screen itself. I wish Square would do the same. I'm still a bit cautious with using Square, as they are still not completely PCI compliant(at least not that I have seen) which has enormous fines if you are ever caught.

Kyla,

You'll probably have closer to 50% cash sales making the processing fees much lower than you predict.

I just downloaded the new (http://revelsystems.com) iPad POS Revel just released Atlas.  Wow it is really great they had the best buy geek squad come in and setup the system for us pain free as i don't know much on installing POS systems and did not want to pay a dealer a lot of money.    The system is great when i lost internet last week i was still able to print my orders to the kitchen and take credit and cash orders even when i had no internet.   If you are in the business of staying in business Revel is the way to go!
