I recently interviewed this girl whom needed a job very quickly, however I couldnt hire her until November when I open. She had already told me that she was do to start with Starbucks and wished that we were opening sooner so wrote me thanking and wishing me the very best......read on, she puts so eloquently-she's 18.

"On one last note, I love how you want to educate and empower all your baristas, bringing them to a whole new level. I find it so sad that after being in training with Starbucks, they have not taken anytime to develop or nurture my skills as a barista. I came into Starbucks, fully knowing they wouldn't teach me everything, but hoping that they would enhance my knowledge and skill as a barista. Not once have they taught me about foaming milk, pulling shots, or what great espresso encompasses, etc. There is no beauty in what we do at Starbucks, we only push the buttons and pour the milk. That being said, with your energy and love for coffee you are going to have the best, most knowledgeable baristas in Arizona, hands down!"

I wish her the very best, we could all be so blessed to find someone with the true desire to want to learn. This just goes to show the passion comes in early stages....especially for coffee!

I actually got my start with starbucks, my relationship for coffee began with them. The evolution of what it has become to me is...well, still evolving. (It was also the only job I have ever been fired from, I want to say it was for being too creative but really it was too missed open shifts due to transportation issues that got me the boot."

really great testimonial Steve.
Where in AZ are you located?
aw. she sounds like she would have been awesome.
North Phoenix...are you close by?

That's cool. We really need to nurture all baristas to understand there's so much more to their coffee education, and we can really use them in the independent coffee house. It's important that every barista understand their role in the coffee industry. They really are the frontline to educating the average consumer about coffee and espresso.
That's too bad. She sounded like she would have been an awesome barista. People need to realize that trying to enhance your barista skills at Starbucks is like refining your cullinary skills at McDonalds =P
I'd invite her to hang out and learn something, she sounds like she has a great attitude, maybe she'd quit 'bux and work for you!
This sort of potential empoyee is gold. If I was you Id be doing everything you can to lure her to your business. Sounds like she would be the ideal employee.
i agree with cedric "People need to realize that trying to enhance your barista skills at Starbucks is like refining your cullinary skills at McDonalds." i have a few friends that work for starbucks and whenever we get together to compare and contrast our skills and just talk about work, i tend to get more scowls than smiles from them. one of them even mentioned how some of their partners were interested in joining the barista guild...which to me sounds a bit strange -- because to me it's like someone who works in the mail room of a company wanting to join the united states postal service carrier's union.

i'm not saying that starbucks isn't a good place to start to learn some of the very very basics, but i don't think that they can provide the proper training or nurturing.
