That's about it for seriously good coffee in DC. If there is anywhere else, I want to know about it, too.

The Common Grounds training center hosts a cupping every Friday morning and a Throwdown now and then.

I'm aware of some rumblings about a new roaster and new coffee shop (unrelated) launching in 2009 - which should help expand the finer specialty coffee scene for our nation's capitol. New policy makers will need to be fueled by all the great coffee DC can muster.

Thanks Treva. I agree with your assessment. I spent the entire day driving from coffeehouse to coffeehouse and couldn't find much that impressed me. I'd rank Peregrine as #1. I wish it were closer to the heart of downtown so that I could visit it again on future business trips. I did find a phenomenal bakery called Baked and Wired. The use Counter Culture coffee and have a La Marzocco. The barista did a decent job preparing my cappuccino. Baked & Wired is down by Georgetown so if you're down in that area, check it out.

Uhm there's also Big Bear Cafe on 1st and R St. NW.

Today I visited another slew of coffeehouses, including Big Bear. It's a little hard to find. They have good beans, good equipment, and the barista was good (he created a pretty intricate latte art design). I'd still rank Peregrine as my #1 choice! Thanks again Treva.

On Friday I visited Big Bear, Tryst and Peregrine. I ordered caps at a each. Tryst was a disappointment, bad foam glopped on top. Big Bear poured a beautiful cap in my small to-go cup. I didn't want to cover the design with a lid. Peregrine featured Finca Mauritania Pulp Natural Espresso. It made a nice cappuccino and the barista made a nice presentation. The foam was consistent, smooth and silky. I've yet to try Grape and Bean in Alexandria. Next time. Murky certainly warrants repeat visits and I like the scene there. I will get to Baked and Wired for baked treats per your recommendation, John. It is right on the way to the cult bakery Georgetown Cupcakes which just won the big Washington Post 8-week cupcake wars with their righteous Chocolate Ganache cupcake.

My experience with Tryst was much different. The cap I got was smooth and sweet with a decent attempt at a rossetta, no big glob.
