So I'm just looking for some enlightenment on the whole topic. Not trying to glorify instant coffee because to be quite honest, I have no desire to try it. Especially the Sbucks stuff.

My room mate recently bought it. I didn't care because I expected instant coffee to be...ugh.
Now he raves about it. Claiming for instant coffee it isn't bad.

I asked him how it works and he showed me. Hot water and then you pour the grinds from the package into the cup of hot water. Seems like a smart marketing move especially in an economy like ours.

People (some not all) seem to think cutting corners like buying Instant coffee will save them money. Which that is probably true but I don't think you can replicate good coffee at a cheap price.

ANYWAYS how the heck does this instant coffee work? The grinds dissolve in the water...what the eff...thats weird. Can someone explain this? My room mate was trying to tell me that it's "Arabica beans" but I told him thats not anything new.

Thanks guys

It's not made of coffee grounds, it's made of dehydrated brewed coffee(some are freeze-dried). So you get all of the dissolved solids found in a cup of coffee that readily dissolve in water.

What you don't get, however, are all those wonderful volatile aromatics.
French Press....R.I.P.
lol
I just got a couple of samples of the stuff in the mail. My wife requested them from the sbux website. Gonna try them tomorrow in the name of science and post my observations. Pray for me?

Regarding the "money saving" aspect, I thought these were going to sell for $1 a serving? You can certainly beat that with real coffee.

Sipping the VIA Columbia right now...

Package looked nifty, but being so long and skinny made it a little difficult to get all of the contents out.

Aroma not as awful as I expected. All of the charred roast notes you'd expect, a hint of an unpleasantness that I find hard to describe.

Flavor flat, burnt, and bitter. Zero acidity. Full body. Aftertaste unpleasant. Difficult to force myself to consume enough to get good notes. That said, its the best instant I've ever had. It is even better than some brewed coffees that I've had (like this same coffee, stale and preground, purchased from the grocery store... some sort of sick joke at a cupping). Blech!

If you need caffeine, have no coffeemaker, but can boil water, just drink tea.
Figured out the unpleasant aroma - "break room" - coffee that's been cooking on a hotplate.

HA! great description! I worked for years in a library...that statement just took me back...
My sister is all over the instant coffee stuff. Ironically as I was making coffee in my french press in our "break room" (LOL) yesterday, somebody asked me how it's different than instant coffee and I began to wonder as well since instant coffee actually dissolves. Thanks for the clarification - my sister preaches instant coffee and how "good" it is; she actually tried to get me to try some over Christmas even after I brought loads of FRESHLY ROASTED COFFEE with me! I was so disappointed.

We've opted for fast and cheap...history's vicious cycle can't seem to stop reapeating itself :(
The only "instant" coffee i've ever enjoyed is NESCAFE, I discovered this insta coffee while working at a Greek themed coffee house in Houston.
We'd whip up the NESCAFE with this soda jerk type of machine, the kind used to make milk shakes....
by combining a few scoops of nescafe with a bit of water and sugar, we'd whip it into frothy goodness then throw in some ice a little more water and a touch of milk super yummy not like poor and dissolve weirdness heh
Wait, people are jumping aboard this instant Sbux deal? That blows my mind. I really thought this was going to bomb in American markets...

...heathens... :0)

Did they used to sell those at the grocery store in little red and white rectangular cans... "International Coffees" or something?
