Wow, sounds like a nice upgrade when I can afford it. Or a recommendation for a new shop I know is going in. Nice fuzzy feeling that since the dosing cuts way back on overdozing it's a payback situation, long term.

Compak is coming out with a new electronic doserless version of the WBC model(conical burrs), it will be nicely priced and performs between the Kony and Robur. I think people will really like them for the price and how they perform. I also agree with other comments on the Jolly it is good as long as you dont get real busy.

Being a newcomer to the cafe' biz it's hard to know how slow a machine is when you have nothing to compare it to. I really appreciate all the knowledge shared here on BX.

I'd agree with everyone's comments so far...we have Super Jollies at both the shops I have worked at here in Buffalo. They are pretty sturdy and reliable but can't always keep up with really high volumes. We've had problems with over-heating when they have to be run nearly-continuously for long periods of time, sometimes to the point that they shut down for a while. Servicing them is pretty easy: I've never had a problem with the motor (outside of those crazy over-heating days), and the burrs are easy to replace. The the only thing that seems to go on them is the mechanical timer that shuts the grinder off if your barista is absentminded...that seems to wear out pretty quickly. I'm not sure if that's a standard feature.

As far as grind quality is concerned, it performs quite well. As far as bang for you buck goes, it is way up there. Used SJ's typically go for ~ $400 on ebay lately. You don't really have to worry about buying used as they last forever. You will however more than likely need a new set of burrs (appx $40) which are super easy to replace yourself. Keep your eye out for one that DOES NOT have the power cord coming out of the side with the larger "foot" sticking out of the bottom/frontside - those are the older models(which are still fantastic).

You can distinguish the newer models by their smaller foot in the front and cord coming from the bottom of the grinder.

I might know of one in exellent condition w/new burrs, PM me if interested.

We've been using a Super Jolly since we opened about five and a half years ago. It's a great grinder for the price, and like all Mazzer, it's built like a tank. We've replaced the dosing spring once and changed burrs a few times, and it's always worked fantastic.

We've outgrown our current grinder and our upgrading, but for a low volume shop I would recommend that, or, the Major (with electronic dosing) as Matt has suggested.

There are many wonderful grinders out there. Find the one that best suits YOUR needs, and that will be the right decision.
