I am looking at stepping off of the home roasting pier into commercial roasting. My poor old Behmor is dying. I am looking at purchasing a 2-3 kilo roaster. I've narrowed it down to 3 brands: Ambex, Garanti (not Hans Garanti) or a Diedrich. Does anyone have an experience with either of these small roasters. I am looking a small roaster that operates quietly and efficiently. The Ambex looks the most attractive because of the price. I looking at buying these new, but I am also interested in buying one used if it is in good condition and a good price.

Also, if anyone has a small batch roaster for sale, I am interested. Contact me.

Thanks.

I have been very happy with my 5 kilo Probat, and frankly very spoiled by the what looks like a 5/8" cast iron drum.
I'm not sure about the Ambex drum materials. Most these days are using Stainless. Have you looked into USRC company. My mentor friend from this list uses a 3K USRC. I think, it is a 3K and very satisfied with it. I know you have to look at the price point and ROI but I get some special warm fuzzies when I think about shopping local, ( USA ), when possible and practical. For our shop we bought the re-built with all the upgrades, 1976 Probat for bling and long term investment.

Buying new can really help with tech support, this is especially important for the less mechanically inclined amongst us. I am very happy with my company's IR-3 and the training offered by Diedrich can be an invaluable resource and certainly has saved me a lot of wasted time and coffee.

I don't know what volume you expect or hope for. But supplying even a few good accounts with a 2-3 kilo roaster sounds like a lot of work. If it takes you all day to fill a 75 pound order, you might be able to find a better use of your time (like finding new accounts).
We have nearly 5 years on our Diedrich IR-12 and have loved it. Like James said, great people, great support. Nice thing about Diedrich is the exact top quality goes into every size model they make. They don't cut corners on their smaller models. Very efficient IR burners. Also, on a smaller scale like yours, the internal chaff collection is nice.
When you do find them used, the price is still high unfortunately, but it does speak to the quality and their re-saleability.
I believe spending a little extra on the Diedrich is well worth it.
We are currently planning on increasing roasting operations around here, which means we would sell our Ambex YM-2 roaster in the future. Good machine. Just throwing it out there as a possibility. Stay in touch.

I want to start with a small roaster so that I can get a feel for commercial roasting. I eventually would like to move up to a larger roaster but right now, I think that it will fit my needs. I am going to be roasting in my neighborhood to begin and my neighbors are about a quater of an acre apart from me. How high would you guys suggest I put my stack? Odor is a concern but the main thing is visible smoke. Thanks for the input!!
Paul,
What size of roaster are you going to install first. I have a 5kilo probat with in the city limits of a small town.
so I can give you real world real time experience with this. I do not believe your neighbors will mind. Especially if you offer them some of your fresh roast to try out.

Paul,
I have both a 10KG and 5KG Ambex with their full profiling system. I have been happy with both. I am considering selling both units. PM if you are still looking.
