there's a forum called elitist jerks (which is, of all things, a world of warcraft forum). in this forum, if you ask a question that has been answered anywhere else on the forum, they give you a demerit. do it twice, and they ban you from ever posting again. while that may be the result of insecure geeks powertripping on the internet, i think the point holds, and should be even more applicable to a professional forum such as BX. we're much nicer than those guys are, but we still don't take kindly to people asking questions to which they don't want honest answers.

as an aside, i find it hilarious that people still actually get offended by forums. it's 2010, and this is the internet:

Totally agree with Jared, this is one of the friendliest forums I know. People here are professional and usually give honest and very good advice. The advice in the thread that people are referring to, was, for me, useful as I am also in the process of opening my own business and I like it when people show passion in their replies.

Of course we should not be mean, but if you dummy down the forum too much by always being super polite and politically correct then it would get too boring for me, in specialty coffee forums there should be some heated debate, we all love coffee, we take it seriously, let's show it i the forum too!? :-)

I tend to be direct, but much less so on the forums than in "real" life. I've had friends and long-time internet pals start businesses and go down in flames because they ignored basic advice or worse, they didn't take time to learn the basics on their own. For those who are easily offended, and thin-skinned, you're probably not cut out for running your own business, and that's ok, not everyone is. But take serious input with the understanding of the intention behind it. "Get your head on straight. Be patient and do things right. We'd all like to see you succeed."

Offended? I honestly don't care. It's better than you not being informed and failing because of it.

Political correctness is for outsiders. Coffee brethren need honesty.
