Sam Prekop - Who's Your New Professor
Wilco - Sky Blue Sky
Peter Bjorn & John - Writers Block
The Shins - Wincing the Night Away

Andrew Bird
The Warlocks
The Islands
The Unicorns
Architecture in Helsinki
Travis- the invisible band
Radiohead- in rainbows
I have to second both of those.
If you really want to get hype, go with anything that DJ Shadow and Cut Chemist do together! I.E. Product Placement
Brain Freeze
The Hard Sell (their latest and probably most fun)

Outside of that...
Alela Diane is great folksy stuff. (Matt, I'm sure you're familiar)
Tunng- Sounds wierd but it's Folk/Electronic stuff. Makes ya feel good.
Lee Hazelwood(Trouble is a Lonesome Town)- Better storyteller than Johnny Cash!
Fleet Foxes!!- Believe the hype!! These guys are legit.

Oh man... I want to keep going. This is a great topic...
I've got to throw out Müm as being a great option, too. Laid back electronica with some great sounds and melodies. Great for background or enjoyment.
This reminds me of another one. I once ran a coffeehouse in downtown Athens, and there was this guy who worked at a local record store that put out a sweet ambient electronic record, kinda Chemical Brothers-ish. He was wanting to play at the coffeehouse I ran, but I never could nail down the right time, so it never happened, although I did play his CD in the shop all the time. The name of the CD is Pelican City. The artist is Brian Burton, who also goes by Danger Mouse, and is one-half of the supergroup Gnarls Barkley. Still one of my favorite CD's of that type of music. If you can find it, pick it up. He samples Sesame Street on one of the tracks. Nuff said.
love müm

also dig Alela for sure, the Holocene, which is the label that released her latest album is actually where my wife and I had our wedding! It's a killer place. Another band on that label that is cool is The Shaky Hands.
Any of the Béla Fleck and the Flecktones albums are always fantastic.
Fleet Foxes - Fleet Foxes
Beirut - The Flying Club Cup
The Helio Sequence - Keep Your Eyes Ahead
Sufjan Stevens - anything he records...including a bootleg I have of him from the Crystal Ballroom right there in Portland. I think he's perfect for overcast mornings.

All of this music being thrown around brings up an interesting question/sidenote....

What do you think makes a CD "great for coffee bar atmosphere"?

p.s. I'm fighting hard against the urge to make up fictitious band names and then act stunned and question your indie cred when you don't agree with me wholeheartedly. ;)
Zero 7 - Simple Things
Chris Whitley-Weeds
Kiln- Dusker
Mike Doughty- Golden Delicious
Halloween, Alaska -Halloween, Alaska
Beck - well...anything really

every now and again I like a little Pepe Deluxe or Styrofoam as well

oh and kudos for Zero 7, gotta love a little downbeat organic trip hop to counteract the caffiene
