Anchorage? Anything anything?
I'll be spending some time in Anchorage and was wondering if anyone has any recommendations for shops in the area?
I did some internet searching, but it looks like everything is pretty much blend, blend, blend, blend, Kenya AA, blend, blend, Colombian Supremo, blend, blend.
Being from Portland I'm a little (well, a lot) spoiled by coffee choices and a burgeoning boom of passionate roasters and baristas.
Any must sees in the frozen land?

Hey there,
I lived in Anchorage for 3 years and drank a lot of Kaladi Coffee. It is the best in town. Unfortunately, after living in PDX for 4 years, I re-visited AK with my boyfriend and was embarrassed to share Kaladi with him.
What you must do instead is....go to Homer! You should go to Homer anyway (one of my favorite places on earth) but you can also get Kbay coffee (I think that it stands for Katchemak Bay). It is the best in the state as far as I am concerned. Good Luck.

My girlfriend is already up there and has gone to Kaladi on the recommendation of some people in the area. Not to toot my own horn too much, but she is used to the level of quality that we produce here and in surrounding PDX, and consequently she... well... she told me to bring coffee, haha.
We're only up there for like 5 days, so Homer won't be happening, but I imagine when/if/when we revisit we'll make it that way. Our schedule isn't *too* open while we're up there, so 4 hour treks for coffee aren't really an option unfortunately.
I do appreciate the input, though.

Come on, brother, I KNOW you've got to be used to packing your own coffee kit every time you travel. Right?
I always hope to find a gem, but I also never expect to. I recommend the same approach. So far so good.

I did a coffee tour in Achorage over the summer... slim pickings.
Kaladi is certainly the "best" you're going to get.
The best shot I had was actually at a chocolate shop downtown. I talked to the barista there for a long time about how I liked my shots and she worked really hard to get it right... i was actually really impressed with how eager they were to please (Modern Dwellers @ 423 G Street).... UNLIKE Dark Horse Coffee Co which I would list as one of the worst customer experiances I have ever had... avoid that place. Also avoid kobuk coffee.
