I figure this would be the best place for this discussion, can one be too obsessed with coffee? I mean ill find myself pulling a shot of espresso at home, half way threw the shot i think "man thats a good shot" so I scramble to grab my phone out of my pocket to take a picture of it before the shots threw.(is that wierd) In fact now that i think about it, I have about 200 photos on my phone and 190 of them are pictures of latte art, or shots pouring, or something coffee related. Only 10 of them are actually of people. Like right now I wish i was pulling a shot of espresso, but theres only so much i can drink in one day. There is got to be people worse than me, right. So, how coffee obsessed are you? Did you sell your car so you could get a gb5 for your house?

Heres another example, ill sit on youtube for an hour or two just watching shots being pulled from a rancilio silvia. Kind of comparing how there shots look to mine. Ill then do the same thing few weeks later.
I totally get where you're coming from! While I was out of coffee work for a long time, I lost the obsession over time. But recently I was supposed to get a job working at a new coffee drive-thru in the area (sadly couldn't get enough hours, so had to deny the position) and the obsession came back. I've been reading everything there is to read, watching YouTube videos, and applying at every single shop in a twenty five mile radius (I live in a small town, so that's pretty much every shop in town). I now feel like I HAVE to get back into the business or I just won't be happy!
If I wasn't so pressed for cash, I would have bought a home device a long time ago, and now that's killing me as well. At least you can pull shots in your free time! Haha.
It really is an amazing job, so who wouldn't get a little "obsessed"?
Awesome, glad you can relate. I know theres people out there who are just as passionate about coffee as me if not more so(obviously a lot are here on barista exchange) but I dont really know anyone in "real life" thats as consumed as me. (All though its my mission to find them now that im back in the bay area) Like im pretty positive no one i work with, gets off work and then reads or thinks about coffee.(all though that may have more to do with the place im working at right now) Anyone else a little to obsessive?

Oh there's plenty of people who willingly define themself as obsessed. It's one of the endless possible ways we can define ourselves and so might be an integral part of one's self image. One could say: "you know, I'm a coffee guy, I'm obsessed with coffee".

How would it make you feel if you knew someone other that you'd consider obsessed? If "being obsessed" is defined trough our actions compared to other people, would you then redefine the meaning of being obsessed or would you carry on being obsessed? If so, then you truly are obsessed :)

wow...i'm actually in the process of fixing my car to sell for that specific purpose....

maybe we are obsessed. but isn't that how people get good coffee? because we obsess so much that it is PERFECTION?
Sometimes I wish I could find a burger shop worker that obsessed over burgers like I do over coffee. They always tend to mess something up. ;D

Obsession is rarely considered a good thing. Do you dream about coffee? Does every conversation you have revert to talking about coffee? Do your friends, family, or significant other complain that they can't hold a conversation with you because you'll shut it out and start talking about coffee? Are you conscious of the swirl as the toilet flushes as though it were the whirlpool during milk frothing? Do you ever see a fallen leaf on the ground and critique its contrast and symmetry and decide that it was a pretty crappy pour?

I have been (but am no longer) guilty of all of the above. It wasn't healthy.

Hi, my name is Jason and it's been (hmm.. let's see..) 3 years since my last obsessive behavior.
Ditto.

You guys should be passionate, not obsessed. Obsessive-compulsive disorder is not a matter of laughter and it's definately nothing to strive for. I've seen people who are actually certain they'll die if they don't take the same route to work every day or people who are constantly afraid of being contaminated if they don't change their toothbrush each day. Being obsessed can even reach psychotic proportions. I've heard a story about a boy who was certain that if he didn't do something (can't remember what excactly) he had to drown himself.
