With semi's you must manually start and stop your shots. With auto you manually start and can either use as a semi and manually stop your shot or use volumetric programmed button to start and it will automatically stop your shot when programmed volume reached. With an auto at anytime during shot you can switch to full manual operation.
Ditto. It's a few more bucks or the automation, but if you get distracted for a second, the automation will turn off your shot at a pre-determined programmable (by you) volume.
I tend to use the automatic switch to turn on the extraction, and again to turn it off when I think that it's done, and have the thing set for jut over 2 oz. in case the phone rings or the dogs go crazy. I can imagine a hundred other things in a professional environment that might distract a barista.
Compare the cost, and if it's not huge, take advantage of the convenience. Consider, as well, that it's a tad more complicated electronics to fail, but they're pretty danged bullet-proof.
