I want to go on origin within the next two years.

For those that either own farms or have gone to origin before - how should I go about finding a farm? How long can you be on the farm? How involved can someone get with the day to day on the farm? Has anyone gone to origin under a sponsorship?

Thanks for your time!

Lisa, there are farms in Hawaii that will provide food and shelter for you while you work on their farm. It's usually for a set period of time, weeks or months. You are obligated to work a certain hours per week, like 20 or so. I'm sure you can find farms in Central America as well. You will learn a lot. My friend just completed a two month stay at a small, off the electrical grid, organic farm. Then went back to Japan afterward feeling very satisfied with the experience.
That's similar to what I'm looking to do.

Some coffee people I know are going on a short origin trip to Nicaragua next month.  Not sure the details, but it sounded like it was pretty reasonable price... around a hundred bucks plus airfare.  Will see if I can get some details and post back.
Awesome. I'd really appreciate it.  : )

hey everyone!, i'd like to jump in and jump on the bandwagon here!...i think this going to origin thing is fantastic!  the idea of walking the walk, and learning the origins, and honoring the people and the bean is what its all about.  who knows, maybe those interested could pick a location and work towards making it a reality.  my vote is for anywhere reasonably affordable!  i live on the east coast, so hawaii is a stretch here.  i'd really like to "un-learn" some of the misconceptions i may have carried over the years, and form more of a personal identity with the farmers and the beautiful bean, for sure.

Lisa, hi!  just started doing courses in my farm.  it is located in the Dota Mountains, town of providencia, in Tarrazu Costa Rica.

it is amazing, the town only has 300 people, you enjoy down home cooking in our house, it is really special time.  you also get to do work, real work, not just touristy stuff.

I hosted the first couple this past week. He will write about it in his blog, coffeetroupe.com, should keep an eye open for his comments.  Also, i can email you an outline for the course.  pls give me your email.

the deatils will be online by next week.  it will be great if you decide to join us at the Down to Earth Estate.

Matias

I would also love to have the outline if you don't mind. (caseyloseth@hotmail.com)

Sage, hi!

See my post to Lisa.  I think going origin, specially with the quality coffee we produce in Dota, is fantastic. i had this man and his wife last week and he was blown away to see how things make more sense now.  He was an expert from green bean on but now he went full circle.

i can email you the outline of my course, it is $1295 per person, all inclusive from the time you land in Costa Rica. and i am secretive about anything, i am pretty open to share my methods, so you will definitely learn.  I will have the details of the course on my web by next week, if you give me your email i will send you an attachment with the outline.

tks,

$100!!! jump on it, definitely, it is dirt cheap.  My course, a bit different than a trip, is $1,295 per person plus airfare but includes all meals, rooms and transportation..

Have already emailed you the outline.  Look it up in the junk mail folder, most likely it is there bec my email originates in Costa Rica and we get flagged as spammers easily.

Lisa, if that is what you are looking for, then you can opt for a position as a volunteer to work on my 2011-2012 harvest.  Starts in late december and goes thru March.  Your duties will be datagathering on the harvesting process and sundrying coffee. We use a SINAR moisture analyzer, piece of cake,  you need to be organized and thorough.
