Coffee Shop Internship?

I was wondering if there were any coffee shop owners/managers willing to take on an intern that would like to see and learn how a shop operates. I can imagine a great many practical reasons why a…Continue

Hi Mike. Indonesia is still pretty cost wise...you can stay in a Hyatt/Hilton for around $75/night if you so chose! My recomendation would be to use the good quality 3 star hotel where posssible- around $40/night maximum. Travel by plane these days is safe and reasonable (to most places at ;least). Interisland flights Java to Bali-or further east between US40 to US70 depending on distance. All up it should be very easy to survive well on an average of US65/day I would think.
If you have a week I would use JAL and fly into Bali- then do East Java, Bali and Flores- exiting again grom Bali. The only tyhing to watch is the ground transport, which is cheap BUT not always punctual! Doing the recommended rout would pretty much avoid any real dramas I would say. You would also see an established origin (East Java) and two emerging origins- Bali and Flores.

Hi Mike! Thanks for the comments. I would say look at what coffees you are going to work with for your new biz. I dont necessarily want to put you off Sumatra, but it is as well trodden as the trails in the Apalachian Mountains in July and August! I could help you put together something for Sumatra- probably Aceh-Sidikalang-West Sumatra... but would think depending on ime you might want to do an East Indonesia trip- maybe start in East Java, then Bali-Flores and even Papua if you have time. Let me know how much time you have... will then make a few more recommendations. Best for the new year

The Great Good Place - Part 2

Posted on January 30, 2010 at 10:10pm 0 Comments

My continued thoughts on Ray Oldenburg's "The Great Good Place:

Ray highlights the need for the Third Place to be a neutral ground, "where individuals may come and go as they please, in which none are required to play host, and in which all feel at home and comfortable."

Of course, this is in stark contrast to the home (First Place) and work (Second Place) that cannot be neutral to various friends from different houses/workplaces. I spent a while thinking about how… Continue

The Great Good Place - Part 1

Posted on January 9, 2010 at 9:34pm 5 Comments

This is the first of a short series of blogs written to document my thoughts on Ray Oldenburg's book, "The Great Good Place." In his book, Ray discusses the 'Third Place' as the public places where people go to enjoy the company of others in an informal social setting as necessities for our personal and community health. Henceforth, references to the author's work will be discussed as Ray's ideas/assertions.

Ray makes a historical reference to the post WWII era, where after the… Continue

The Future of Coffee and the Third Place

Add lack of access to good coffee to the list of sacrifices required of deployed military service members..

So my supervisor (MAJ B) recently ordered a Keurig for our regional trans office in Afghanistan.. At first I was excited about getting away from the $20 coffeemaker, but my hopes would soon be crushed by the lack of good coffee it produced.

I don't know as much as I'd like to about quality coffee, but the bitter brew this 'revolutionary' machine kicked out was on par… Continue

Coffee Shop Name

Posted on December 23, 2009 at 3:13am 0 Comments

I've been playing around with different name possibilities and logos for a while now.

On one hand, I do wish that I had the name figured out as one less 'to do' on an already infinitely long list. On the other hand, I'm comforted by the fact that I'm not going to settle for a sub-par name that doesn't capture the essence of the business I'm making plans to create and that when the name finally does come to be, it will be 'the one' much in the same way that I knew my wife was 'the… Continue
