I apologize ahead of time if this is inappropriate to discuss.  May the forum powers-that-be remove this thread if necessary.

Okay, so I was having a discussion with a friend this morning over coffee, and the conversation turned to kopi luwak and the relationship between coffee and other "brown stuff".  He said that he thinks he drinks so much coffee every day that when he relieves himself ("number 2"), he swears it sometimes smells like coffee.  Anyone else with a similar experience?  Is this even possible?

Ah ha. That's a funny but really good question. I've never experienced that or known anyone else who has (but maybe no one would tell me if they did) but your #1 can certainly change too. Coffee being acidic can surely make your pee sour and change the smell. Same with lots of beer, alcohol and other acidic drinks.

Anyway... just thought I had to respond to this off-topic! I will follow the responses.
Isn't coffee also alkaline?

This reminds me of an old issue of the Too Much Coffee Man magazine that featured an article on coffee enemas...hilarious and informative.
Have you considered the possibility that your friend is just used to coffee that smells like poo? Sorry... I meant "earthy"... my bad :).

Seriously, though... I have noticed a definite dog poo smell present in some coffees some times. At times it has been enough to make me go check the living room carpet.
"...just used to coffee that smells like poo?" <--- Brady this just made my morning :)

Strangely enough...

Dimethyl disulfide
A product of roasting the green coffee bean, this compound is just at the threshold of detectability in brewed java. Good thing, too, as it's one of the compounds that gives human feces its odor
Ha! Haven't noticed that one, but I definitely notice coffee odor in my urine. This is probably very similar to being able to smell asparagus odor in the urine, which I also have no problem noticing!
So it looks like there's at least a slight chance that my friend's claim is valid. Huh.
Send it to myth busters!
