Going to Portland (Oregon, that is) for 5 days next month to visit fam and am looking for some new places to check out.  Just any coffeehouse that roasts their own coffee and is doing something cool and different but is not overly hipster :)

Opening our first coffeeshop in a couple months and am looking for some inspiration, and, of course, some delicious coffee!  Any tips would be appreciated :)

Thanks!

I had the best time in Portland! Got to check out Coffeehouse Northwest, Public Domain, Barista, and Courier Coffee. All were great in their own way. Wished I could have also seen Heart, Coava and Water Ave....maybe next time. Thanks BXers :)
Thanks Jason. We have our new website up as well: http://wateravenuecoffee.com

I was on a similar trip as yours a few weeks ago and began a similar thread!

Best advice I got was from the Baristas at Barista and Sterling. They hooked me up with another half dozen places and all were excellent. Most baristas are like you and me: friendly folk who wanna help people find what they're looking for.
I had a great trip, drank way way too much espresso and cappuccinos every morning. Water Ave was really nice - beautiful build-out. Another one was, I think, Bambu...I probably have the name wrong but any Portlander should know it.

I'll find my old post and paste it here...Gimme a minute!
cafe velo
i second *heart* coffee roasters. their design is impeccable and they have ingenious storage and barflow design. very well thought out from a barista's perspective.
and i second case study coffee. awesome.
