Hey all.

I'm visiting a friend of mine in NYC in a couple weeks. Unfortunately, she has informed me that as far as she can tell, there are no good specialty coffee shops around that she's seen.

Anyone have any recommendations? And I do NOT mean starbucks. What I have in mind is a small, community based coffee shop with specialty coffee and experienced baristas with a cozy atmosphere to go along with it. :)

Cafe Grumpy comes to mind.  NYC has a great scene for coffee, actually.  Stumptown and Blue Bottle have places there, too.  Gimme! Coffee is another icon.  Do some more digging on the net and you will find that you'll be spoiled for choice.

Chris:

Head down near Chambers Street by the WTC site across from Whole Foods and visit Cafe 1668.  Good espresso, good vibe.  The place is always busy.

There are plenty of good specialty coffee shops in NY.

9th Street Espresso.  They have a few shops in Manhattan.  The only location I've visited is their coffee bar inside the Chelsea Market.  Amazing coffee.
Here is a great interactive map from the NYT as well.
thanks for all the suggestions! I will definitely be checking these places out!
another vote for 9th street espresso--i went to the chelsea market and also the thompkins square park location--thompkins square park is less hurried, i'd go there if you want them to take their time on your beverage. also Joe, in a few diff locations.
I've never personally been, but my boss raves about FIKA, which is on 58th st between 5th and 6th.
Steven - good call on recommending Kaffe 1668. I loved it so much I went twice and spent about 35 bux taking coffee home with me...lol. the coffee was fantastic. you gotta love a place that can make each cup of coffee fresh when ordered. Thanks again!

I am actually quite surprised that your friend would even suggest that NYC could possibly be lacking in the specialty coffee department.
