In Italian; Cafe = Coffee (espresso - not much going on as far as other brew methods) and Latte = Milk. Thus 'Cafe Latte' is coffee with milk. If you order a 'latte', as my friend did not realizing, you will get steamed milk. Not sure about the Au Lait - I would guess they would make you a Cafe Latte if you asked for Au Lait, but maybe someone else would know better.
i have some OG italian customers -- and this, they say, is true. latte just means milk, so yes -- if you order a latte in italy, milk is all you'll get. an au lait (cafe au lait) -- is it's french counterpart.. similar to the cafe latte but made with coffee (usually dark, i think), 1/2 coffee and 1/2 steamed milk. :)
