Hello All!
I am looking to open up shop in the next 1-3 years. I know how important location is to business. I would like to hear from you all what you feel is most important to location. I am trying to prioritize between (1) Business District (2) College Area or (3) Shopping District.
Please share pros/cons to each. Thanks!!

Tara,
That's quite a broad question!
It's the specific location that is important, rather than the general location. The general location is a starting point based on what type of customers you want to build your business around. And only you can answer that question.
Some things to think about:
Does the business district shut down after 5 or 6 pm?
Is it downtown, or is it specifically a business area?
If the business/downtown area is within a few miles of the college area, the students will come... it doesn't work the other way around.
Near the campus is often better than on the campus.
Is the college area coffee drinkers or laptop users?
Large potential customer base is good if that is the customer base you desire.
Shopping districts are about volume and convenience. Most of the potential customer base in that type setting only come because of where you are, not who you are.
Location of convenience? Or Destination?
Would your menu change based on location? Would pricing change based on location?
Think about avg ticket prices in each location. Think about staffing and labor costs in each location.
Travel! Take notes on what you see as your ideal shop in each type of location and take the next several months going over what you have learned and then develop a plan from there.
John,
This is great information. Opens up some ideas in my mind. I really appreciate your help!
