I am a coffee shop owner in California. I currently allow texting at work as long as they get their work done. Now I have a few new people and it has become a distraction. I am considering a no personal texting at work policy.

What is the policy at your store?

NO personal use of phone while on shift on the clock unless it's an emergency, period.

I agree. I work with a lot of baristas who text while working and it makes me feel like I am doing more work than they ate. Unless your fellow baristas are alert to customers, I would say no more texting.

Rob, I agree 100% - I think it is usually a bad idea to allow the phones to be used at all.  No FB, Reddit, texting or random Googling (sp?) should be happening.

Oh, and Hi Rob!
