About Me:
I live in Portland Oregon where I am the director of training at the American Barista & Coffee School and Bellissimo Coffee Advisors. I am also a partner at Water Avenue Coffee. I spend most of my time training new and existing business owners how to open and operate successful retail coffee businesses. In my spare time you might find me having coffee or sipping a pint at one of Portlands great coffee shops or brew pubs. I spend lots of time also with my beautiful wife and little wiener dog.
Professionally I have been in this industry for almost 15 years and have worked as a barista, manager, trainer and consultant. I speak at Coffee Fest and SCAA Tradeshows and sit on the SCAA Training Committee as a lead espresso trainer and was on the USBC Committee 2007/08. I have been certified as a judge for the NWRBC/USBC and have placed 3rd in the MillRock Latte Art Competition. I have written articles for Barista Magazine, Fresh Cup Magazine, Specialty Coffee Retailer and the SCAA Chronicle and have been quoted in many magazines and newspapers in regards to specialty coffee and retail coffee business.
About My Company:
The American Barista & Coffee School [ABC's] is the first and only professional school in the U.S. devoted to domestic and international specialty coffee business education and hands-on barista training. No other coffee school can match the scope of ABC's educational and retail success-building curriculum.
What is your favorite thing about the coffee industry?
teaching people about how amazing coffee is, and seeing them fall in love.
hey matt, miss portland alot! great work in doing this barista exchange website. you are a master! haha by the way, check this theme cafe website out that i was telling you in school: http://www.rmlicensing.com/ENG/snoopy/charlie_brown_cafe/html/shop.htm
how r u compadre, How is life?? I'm in Atlanta atteding a coffee tasting program. I was going to ask you , what did u think about the coffee tours I shared with you??? Let me know as I have many other options regarding coffee tours or so.
hmmm, I've tried coconut milk with the chili mocha, but it was completely overshadowed by the chocolate and the chilli. I also treid lime in an espresso to try and add a citrus edge, but it failed.... however in a black chemex pour on ice, lime in a Yirgacheffe makes it taste awesome!
Matt... did you throw Ritual a keg for the party they threw last weekend? Cheers, man! much appreciated. Terry Z and I had to untap the floater at the end of the night while pushing the crowd out into the Mission. the WRBC was a solid good time.
You will be welcome and I would be happy to take you on an underwater tour. I can just see it, sipping some cognac, smoking some cubans and having a nice cappuccino.
Matt, hope you're doing great these days. Our new location is a huge improvement but we are still struggling a bit. Check out this link to see my coffee shop 360 tour, let me know what you think.

Thanks Matt, good ol' Eugene, it hasn't changed much. The weather has been very interesting, snow and hale in the spring! Not too unusual for Oregon! I will be in your stomping grounds soon, I'm moving to Portland pretty quick.
Hello Matt!
I'm a barista here in Brazil for six years now, and I´d like to change some information and share some of my experience with people around the globe, so I discovered barista exchange, and i like it !

Thanks for looking out for jobs for us as well.
thanks for building this crazy thing, matt, and for the kind words about Floyd's. I started there a few months ago, and am really enjoying it. We're working on another shop in Old Town as well.
Hi Matt,

matt.
good to hear from you. i just recently noticed your comment on letting you know if i will be swinging by portland in my very first NW tour extravaganza, and i will indeed be in portland. interestingly enough, i have been talking with ben king some who also suggested perhaps getting in touch with you and stopping by. i've been a barista for the last 5 years here in holland and i am excited to get to meet the people behind the specialty coffee scene in america, as i hope to be moving to denver in the near future and start something there.
i will be in portland tuesday, june 3rd and will head back to seattle at 2pm on thursday, june 5th. would there be a chance for me to get to stop by and say hi?
if so, could you please let me know what time would be good for you? i'll be free tuesday late afternoon/evening, wednesday late afternoon/evening and thursday morning/afternoon.
i'll be helping rick wilson out at his café velo stand on wednesday and would appreciate knowing what your address is to see if i can bike to your location. if you have another place in mind, let me know and i'll make plans for it.
by the way, would you know anyone in seattle who would be able to put me up for a few nights? rick wilson generously offered me his place for the time i am in portland.
looking forward to hearing from you,
ned
Thanks for your welcome comment.
I meant to write you and Jared an email with some feedback for the class, but I have been really busy this week. In any case, the class was great!
Take care!
