After I left running The Bean'ry in Athens, I moved to NC where my wife lived. I eventually took a job with Krispy Kreme Coffee as an Assistant Roastmaster, and learned about coffee from that side. After being laid off there, I moved to Charlotte, in Caribou's management training program to become a manager with them. (As much as I didn't want to really, it was just all there was around here.) After waiting there, I got tired of waiting and knew I deserved much more because of my experience, so I sent out some resumes, and here I am at my job now. It's great because I get to use all the things I have learned over the years at one time. A full 360 degree view of what it takes to be successful. Glad you have had fun! Can't wait to hear the stories!

How are things going for you these days?
  • Brian Muller

Hiya Peg, Things are good here. Sorry for slow response. I've taken a break from working at the Phoebus Coffee House due my main job getting busy. I am an emergency planner for the Dept of Defense. I am going to go to the event in Charlotte in Nov. Maybe I'll see you there?

Hi Peg! I ran across a comment you made to a W. MI person and came to see your page. Beautiful store - congratulations! It seems like you're doing it right. My goal is to get away from office work and get back into coffee with a plan to own a store or maybe a cart at first. How long did it take you to get a handle on latte art? I've been practicing on my own and it's downright ugly at times! I'm also wondering what kind of lunches you do? Best wishes!
  • teresa pilarz

Thanks for the post Peg! It's inspiring every time I hear that someone is living their dream. Coffee has been mine for a long time now too, but I just haven't acted on it. I know I can make it work, it's just intimidating to begin sometimes. I'm a big believer in training too...going to my first barista jam this week in W. MI! Keep up the good work - it's independents like yours that keep raising the bar on coffee. Nice to meet you!
  • teresa pilarz

hey peg...thanks for the encouragement!! at this point i'm telling myself i just need to stay focused and take small steps everyday toward my goal. it's a challenge to do this mid-career, but i'm determined. the barista jam was amazing from the standpoint of both being able to practice and also test out different equipment. and meeting lots of other people in coffee. if you ever have a chance to do one, it's a great opportunity. i will definitely keep in touch...you too!

by the way, you have a great thing going with intelligentsia. i'm not exaggerating when i say that in all my coffee tasting, the most enjoyable latte i've ever tasted came from intelligentsia. they are awesome!

Hey Peg, What a great looking shop! I just got back from ABC two weeks ago. LOVED IT! good luck, please stop by if your ever in vermont:)
  • eric

    Hey Peg,
the space was an old restaurant that went out of business, took a lot of time but ended up with a really fun spot. I find it so helpful to keep in touch with fellow shop owners.....we feel the same pain:) take care
  • Nichola

Hi Peg your shop looks great. Finished the ABC course a few weeks ago and my mind is spinning. I'm inspired by those of us who make it happen (one day soon I will include myself in that.) Your latte art is impressive.
    Well done.
    Nichola

It is so true, that IS why we get up at 5 in the morning. And as much as it is about the coffee, its always about the cutomers first...whatever weird thing they may want. I love this business.
  • Lou Barba

    That, madame, is a fish!
  • Lou Barba

Hi Peg, That is a really nice Marzocco. I think that I've visited your shop in my travels. Happy New Year!
